Description

- v. c. SMITH COPYHCLDER Filed Oct. 25,1924
INVENTOR ZC-Smiill ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 5, 1926.
UNITED STATES VERNER CLINTON SMITH, OF SALINA, KANSAS.
COPYHOLDER.
Application filed October 23, 1924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VERNER C. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residin at Salina, in the county of Saline and gtate Kansas, have invented a new and useful Iniprovement in Copyholders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to copyholders.
The object is to provide a simple, cheaply manufactured and strong and durable device for holding a stenographers pad, paper or manuscript in the proper inclined position for reading or transcribing the same.
Another object is to provide means on the copy holding or supporting plate for engagement with the back cover of said pad, or the sheets of paper or manuscript, for the purpose of retaining the same upon the support in a manner to offer no interference to the turning of the pages or sheets or with the reading of the stenographic notes or other matter thereon.
A final object is to provide a copy holder which may be readily folded up into a compact form to occupy little space, and which may be easily and quickly set up for use by the simple engagement of a single member to properly maintain the desired inclined position without danger of collapsing.
A full and complete understanding of the invention may be obtained from a consideration of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, it being understood that while the drawing shows a practical form of the invention, the latter is not to be confined to strict conformity with the showing thereof, but may be changed or modified, so long as such changes or'modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the in.- vention, as specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder and showing the means for attaching a pad thereto;
Figure 2 is a similar view of the device looking from the rear;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the device in folded position;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary plan illutrating the connection between the copy holding Serial No. 745,461.
plate and the prop for supporting the same in inclined position;
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of a portion of said prop.
The improved copy holder comprises a main supporting plate 1 formed of suitable sheet metal of suliicient strength and stiffness to prevent bending, said plate being of rectangular form, somewhat longer than wide, and provided along its long, side edges with a plurality of spaced inturned prongs 2, preferably formed integrally with the plate, the prongs being tapered and slightly spaced apart from the surface of the plate to provide room for the side edges of the back S aced hin c-e es 7 are formed at the i lower end of the plate 1, for interfitting relation to the corresponding eyes 8 of a base plate 9, formed of metal similar to the plate 1, said base being of the same width as the supporting plate 1 but only about one-half the length thereof. A hinge pin 10 is passed through the alined eyes 7 and 8 and the base plate is thus adapted to fold against the underside of the supporting plate when desired.
At the rear edge the base plate 9 is provided with a pair of centrally-located, spaced eyes 11, between which the terminal eye 12 of a prop or brace 13 formed of sheet metal, is adapted to be hinged by means of the pin 14:, the said prop being of a length to be folded down upon the base plate 9 prior to the folding of the plate 1 thereon.
Adjacent to its free end, the prop 0r brace 13 is provided with opposite recesses 15 formed in its side edges to provide a laterally-disposed head 16 of the same width as the prop, and connected thereto by a neck 17 which is bent, as shown in Figure 5, to position the head 16 at an angle to the prop, to correspond to the acute angle of inclination of the copy-supporting plate 1. The width of the aforesaid entranceopening 6
