FRANK A. BROOKS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
ARM-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,087', dated September 8, 1891.
Application tiled January 3l, 1891. Serial No. 379,852. (No model.)
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. BRooKs, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Arm-Rests; and Ihereby declare the :following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide an arm-rest for accountants and others that can be used to advantage at any part of a book, whether at the front or back pages or in the center; and it consists of a long plate or leaf, to one end of which is formed a box having a cover. On theinner side of said cover is a sliding leaf that is operated by a push-pin, all as will appear, together with other details, in the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l shows my invention applied to the cover of a book, so that it forms a rest for the arm when it is desired to write on the first pages. Fig. 2 is a perspective view with the leaf Il withdrawn and the cover Fopen. Fig. 3 isa view of the back or bottom side of leaf A, showing the pin K extending through the slot L. Fig. LL is a sectional view.
A represents a long leaf or plate adapted to be inserted between the leaves of a book. At one end is formed a box consisting of the sides I3 C, ends D E, and cover F. The cover is hinged to the end E at G G. On the inner side of the cover F is placed a sliding plate or leaf II, which is kept in position byguides I J. This sliding leaf His operated by means of a push-pin K, which, when the cover F is closed, passes through a slot or opening L in the bottom of the box, so that its lower end projects slightly below the bottom of the box, so that by putting the hand beneath the leaf A and pressing against the pin K the sliding leaf II is proj ected or withdrawn. On the inner side of the box I place a partition M, surrounding the slot L, so as to prevent the contents of the box coming in contact with the pin K. I thereby form two compartments in the box, which maybe used for keeping postage-stamps, pens, memorandums, &c. One edge of. the leaf A is graduated with a scale, as shown at N, which renders it convenient for measuring. The opposite edge O may be made sharp, so as to be used as a check-cutter. Either of these edges may be used as a ruler in marking lines with a ruling-pen by turning` the arm-rest over, as shown in Fig. 3, or by forn'iing a bead on the edge.
The operation of my invention is as follows: XVhen it is desired to use an arm-rest to assist an accountant in writing on the first pages of a book, the sliding leaf 1I is projected out so as to extend below the leaf to be written on and the cover of the book is placed between the two leaves or plates of the armrest, as shown in Fig. l, thereby providing a solid support. When this device is to be applied to the center part of a book, the leaf H may be withdrawn and the device applied as an ordinary arm-rest, or the extension-leaf H can be left projected, so that a number ot' leaves of the book will be embraced between the plates A and II, thus forming an extremely drm support.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An arm-rest composed of a long plate adapted to be inserted between the leaves of a book, a box attached to one end to form a support for the arm, and a short supplemental leaf adapted to be projected between the leaves of a book at a short distance above the lower plate, substantially as described.
2. An arm-rest consisting of one or more plates or leaves adapted to be inserted between the leaves of a book, and a box arranged at one end to form the arm-support, said box being provided with a hinged cover, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand.
FRANK A. BROOKS.
