UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IDA M. REW, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
CO RS ET-WAIST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,282, dated May 19, 1896.
Application filed February 21,1896 Serial No. 580,143. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IDA M. REW, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oorset-VVaists, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification. 7
My invention relates to an improvement in corset-waists; and it consists in the novel construction of the same hereinafter fully described.
The object of my invention is to provide a corset-waist which is adapted to encircle the waist of the wearer and having a yoke portion extending up over the shoulders, the waist and yoke portions forming one garment, the said garment being provided with a means for permitting the same to be adjusted to the I-Ieretofore it has been common to provide a garment of the character described, but the same has not been provided with a means for permitting the adjustment of the yoke portion. Inasmuch as persons having the same waistmeasure may vary greatly in the measurement from the waist-line over the shoulder, the desirability of having an adjustable shoulder or yoke portion is apparent, as by this means only is it possible to get a perfect-fitting and comfortable garment.
My invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 illustrates the upper portion of a female figure wearing my improved corsetwaist, illustrating the means of adjustment; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of that portion of my invention which permits the adjustment.
Similar letters refer to similar parts.
A is the waist portion of the garment, which may be made in. varying sizes, as is customary.
B is the yoke portion, which extends across the entire front of the waist portion and over the shoulders and down to the rear upper edge of the waist, to which it may be attached in any desired manner. Heretofore both the front and the rear of the yoke and waist portions have been rigidly connected, thus making it essential that not only the waist portion be made in varying sizes, but making it essential that that portion extending up over the shoulders be made in varying sizes as well. By my invention the necessity of providing the latter is obviated, inasmuch as the adjustable means hereinafter described is provided for the purpose of permitting the yoke portion to be shortened or lengthened precisely as desired.
D is a flap secured along the lower edge of the yoke portion.
Along the upper edge of the waist portion A is provided an eyeleted trimming E, and along the lower edge of the yoke portion to the rear of the flap D is provided a corresponding eyeleted trimming F.
G is an adjusting-string, alternately passing through the eyelets of the trimming E F.
In operation the waist-measurements of the person to be fitted are ascertained and a corset waist corresponding to such measurements provided. The wearer loosens the string G, and after securing the waist portion of the garment in place takes up the proper amount of slack in the adjusting-string G until the yoke portion extending over the shoulders and across the bust fits properly.
In Fig. 1 the flap D is turned up so as to show the adjusting-string, and from an inspection of the same it is apparent how it readily permits the garment to exactly fit and accommodate itself to the exact curves of the body. In operation the flap D is turned down, so that the adjusting-string is protected and the space between the lower edge of the yoke and the upper edge of the corset is filled in, thus preventing undue exposure of the body and making the garment complete.
I am aware that straps have been provided for the purpose of supporting a corset; but it is readily apparent, from an inspection of the drawings and from the fact that a strap affords no protection, that the article described and claimed herein is of an entirely different construction, and not only accomplishes the end for which the strap is intended, but also additional functions. The strap construction in no way protects the body, and, on the contrary, is likely to change the figure of the wearer, inasmuch as it draws in one line, whereas the corset-waist described herein fits entirely over the bust of the wearer, accommodating itself to the exact figure and giving a smooth surface for theouter garment to fit over. \Vhere straps are used merely to support the waist portion, the said straps very frequently slip off the shoulder, occasioning great discomfort and impairing the fit of the outer garment and permitting the waist portion to sag.
It is obvious that an inner flap correspond ing to the flap D may be provided. If desirable, ordinary eyelets may be substituted in place of the eyeleted beading without departing from the spirit of my invention. The means for adjusting the position of the waist and yoke may be provided at the rear of the garment, if desirable.
In Fig. 1, II is an eyeleted beading extendin g around the upper edge of the yoke, which trimming may be of any ornamental design, and, if desirable, may contain or carry a draw string or ribbon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A corset-waist comprising a body portion, a yoke portion separated from the body portion across the front upper edge thereof ing the adjacent edges of said body and yoke portions on the line of separation, whereby the yoke portion may be adjusted to fit the figure of the wearer, and a flap depending from said yoke portion and adapted to close the space between the adjacent edges of said body and yoke portions, substantially as and for the purpose described.
IDA M. REW.
