Description

(No Model.) v
` W. D. PITTMAN.
BOX FOR GIGARBTTLS. No. 554,140. Patented Feb. 4, 1896'.
mf/j? Effe@ IVILLIAM D. PITTMAN, OF SID-LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE DRUM- MOND TOBACCO COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BOX FOR CIGARETTES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,140, dated February 4, 1,896. Application filed September 25, 1895; Serial No. 563,580. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. PITTMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes for Cigarettes, die., of
which the following is a full, clear, and exi act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a box for the reception of cigarettes or any other article which it may be desired to carry in the pocket; and my invention has for its objectthe formation of a box in which the lid operates a connection within the box to project all the contents at once, so that they maybe readily grasped for removal.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
Figure I is a perspective view of my improved box, showing the lid of the box thrown open and all the contents projected. Fig. II is a view of the parts enlarged and showing the box in vertical section. Fig. III is a vertical section taken on line III III, Fig. IV. Fig. IV is a similar view to Fig. II, in which the lid of the box is shown closed.
Referring to the drawings, l designates the body of the box, and 2 its lid, said lid being preferably provided with flanges 3. It is hinged at 4 to the body of the box.
Connected to the lid 2 are lugs 5, one at each end of the lid, and pivotally connected at 6 to such lugs are straps 7, whose opposite ends are connected to a plate 8 in the interior of the box and extending entirely across the box and adapted to elevate all the contents 4therein on the movement of the lid 2.
A designates cigarettes, the lower ends of which rest upon the plate 8. On the closing of the lid the plate 8 descends to the lower 45 end of the box, and when the lid is opened such plate is raised to the position shown in Fig. II by reason of the straps 7 connecting the plate 8 to the lid, whereby any movement of the lid is imparted to the plate 8, and thus 5o all the contents of the box are projected at once into the position shown in Figs. I and II, where an article, of the contents may be easily grasped to withdraw it without danger of injuring the article.
The body l of the box has a `closed bottom, sides and ends, and the lugs 5 on the lid fit within the box when the lid is closed, so that when the lid is closed nothing but a plain rectangular box is seen. By making the 6o straps 7 flat and locating them against the inner walls of the ends of the box they occupy practically no space or room within the box.
I claim as my invention- A cigarette-box comprising a body having a closed bottom, sides and ends, and a hinged top or lid provided with lugs 5 adapted to fit -down into the box when the lid is closed, a
plate S fitting loosely within the body, and 7o iiat straps fitting against the ends of the box within the latter and secured tc said plate at their lower ends, and pivotally connected to said lugs, substantially as set forth.
WILLIAM D. PITTMAN. In presence of E. I'I. KNIGHT, N. FINLEY.
