IMPROVEMENT IN CIGAR-BOXESf Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 204,040, dated May 21,1878; application filed February 16, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,SPENOER H. HEWLETT, of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Oi gar and Match Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My improvement relates to a box to contain matches, cigars, or cigarettes; and consists of an outer case open at one edge, and a case pivoted therein and'open at one end, with. a spring tending to hold the open end within the outer case, so as to be closed by the upper end of the latter.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement in closed condition. Fig. 2 is a section closed. Fig. 3 is a section opened.
The outer case is shown at A. This has sides a, top a and back a Its lower corner a is preferably rounded, so as to present no angular projection.
Within the case A is the inner case or box B, whose sides I; are parallel with those a, and connected thereto by pivots O. The box is closed at the bottom b and at the edges 11*,
but is open at top to allow the introduction or i'lerlryval of the articles which it is intended to D is a spring, which is attached to the inner side of the back a of case A, and whose. end bearsagainst the corner 12 of the box, so as to tend to hold it in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so that its mouth is closed by the top a of case A.
To open the box, the corners a and b are pressed inward, which turns the top of the box outward into the position shown in Fig. 3. As soon as the corner b is relieved from pressure the upper end of the box returns, by the influence of the spring D, into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
' I claim as my invention The box consisting of the cases A and B, connected by pivot G, and containing the closing-sprin g D, substantially as set forth.
