PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES E. BAKER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 476,237, dated June 7, 1892. Application filed November 11, 1891- Serial No, 411,541- (No model.)
To 'aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a paper or pasteboard box constructed with a lid or cover adapted when opened out to form a funnellike trough or guide whereby the gradual emptying of the box by small quantities is greatly facilitated, and when closed will sufficiently retain and protect the remaining contents of the box.
The invention also consists of the special construction of the box, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my new and improved box, showing the lid or cover thereof open; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the preferred blank or form of which the box is constructed.
The body A of the box may be of any approved size and shape. In the form here shown it is open at one end, and at said end is provided a false or supplemental end piece or cover B, in which is formed an opening B, through which the contents of the box may be poured, and outside of this is formed the main hinged cover or end piece 0, which is formed with a flap 0, which joins the cover 0 at right angles, so that the two together form a funnel-like guide or trough (J c mmdent with the said opening 13", so that it serves as a convenient spout in emptying out the contents of the box. The cover 0 is hinged to the main body of the box and may be closed down over the inner cover B and opening 13'. When opened, the point a. of the flange C, which is elongated, strikes the front wall of the box and serves as a stop to the opening movement of the cover 0 and to hold it in place, as will be seen from Fig. 1.
The box is formed by preference of a blank of pasteboard (shown in Fig. 2) out to form the end slots d d and 6Z2 (Z thus forming the corner-flaps e c and C and c and also cut at the center on opposite edges to form angles ff, forming the flaps f f The blank is scored at h, 72., h h 71 and 71.5 to form the front and back walls Z Z, the side walls Z Z and Z and the flanges m m. It is also scored at n and n to form the bottom pieces k 7c and at n n to form the said covers B and O. In forming up the blank the side walls Z Z lap. one over the other and form a double wall, and the flange O works between them, as shown in Fig. 1. The end or bottom pieces It also lap one upon the other and form a double bottom; but, if desired, to make asingle thickness at the bottom the part 7t and flap 6 may be omitted. The flanges e, e, and c and f f are to be pasted in the interior of the box, and the flanges m m are also to be secured by paste to the inside and outside of the box, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new and improved article of manufacture, a paper box having a permanent cover formed with an outlet-opening, in combination with an outer hinged cover having a flap working within and at the side of the box and extended to strike the wall of the box to lock the hinged cover and flap in open position to form a spout coincident with the outlet-opening, substantially as described.
2. A paper box formed with double walls at one side and provided with a permanent cover formed with an outlet-opening, in combination with an outer hinged cover having a flap working in and between the walls and extended to form a lock or stop for holding the hinged cover and flap in open position, substantially as described.
3. A blank or form for a box out to form the corner slots d, d, (1 and d3, to form the flaps e, 6', c and U, and in the center at each edge to form the angles f f, forming the flaps f f and scored to form the walls Z, Z, Z Z and Z bottom pieces Z0 Z0, and covers B O, the cover B having an opening B formed therein, substantially as described.
