H. F. MILITZER.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IIERMAN FREDERICK MILI'IZER, OF MOUNT OLIVER, PENNSYLVANIA.
MATcH-sAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,250, dated January 21,1896.
Application filed October 29, 1894. Serial No. 527,160. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERMAN FREDERICK MILITZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Oliver, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved matchsafe; and it consists in a device whereby a single match may be delivered at the front of the apparatus by moving a slide, together with certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side sectional elevation of my improved match-safe, partly in elevation, and constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, said section taken on the line oo cc.
To put my invention into practice I provide a frame 1 of a suitable size and form of construction and provide the same with a removable top 2 and an inclined front 3, in which a box of matches 4 may be placed to be delivered one at a time at the front of the device in a manner hereinafter described. Arranged at the base of this inclined front is a horizontal slide 6, having attached to the rear 0f the same a bent frame-like piece of wire pivoted thereto by means of staples. This wire consists of upwardly-projecting forked ends 12 to grasp a match, horizontal portions 9 arranged beneath the slide 6, and an upwardlyextending portion 10 at the rear of the matchreceptacle 4. This port-ion 10 of the wire is held in close contact with the rear of the match-receptacle 4 by means of a spring 11. In operation the slide 6 is moved inwardly by pressure upon the knob 13. This will cause the forked ends of the bent Wire to move down through the openings 7 until in a position as shown in dotted lines at Fig. l, and as the groove passes beneath the matches 5 one will fall into the same, and when the slide is recovered by the action of the spring l0 the said match will be delivered and elevated on the forked arms of the Wire 9.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- In a match-safe, the combination of the gravity-feeding receptacle, the slide adapted to form the bottom of the said receptacle and having a transverse match-receiving pocket in its forward projecting portion, the approximately right-angled, bail-like wire, with its forwardly projecting branches extended upwardly through openings intersecting said match-receiving pocket and forked or adapted to receive a match from said pocket, said baillike Wire being pivotally connected to the rear end of said slide and having its upwardly extended rear portion adapted to bear against the rear of said receptacle, and the spring secured to the rear of said receptacle and resting or pressing upon said bail-like Wire and adapted to also exert pressure upon said slide, thus providing for the automatic and simultaneous forward movement -of said slide and the upward movement of the bail-like wire projecting its forked ends up through the match-receiving pocket of said slide, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto afx my signature this 17th day of October, A. D. 1894.
HERMAN FREDERICK MILITZER. [L. s]
In presence of- JAs. J. MCAEEE, M E. HARRISON.
