MARTIN R. LAND, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
MATCH-SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,371, dated September 13, 1892.
Application filed September 30, 1891. Serial No. 407,311. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARTIN R. LAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes; and'I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
- Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective View of one form of my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in section, of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section. Figs. at and 5 are modifications, and Figs. 6, 7, and 8 are detail views.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in match-safes; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a suitable box or casing having in its upper portion the match-receptacle a. The rear wall a of this chamber is inclined inwardly to the bottom B, the latter terminating a short distance from the front wall 0 of the chamber and separated therefrom by a slot or interval 0.
Working in ways or grooves 01 in the box or casing is the vertically-reciprocating slide D, to which is connected the operating-rod E, which normally projects some distance through the top of the box and terminates in a suitable knob or head E. Said rod works loosely through a perforated lug F in the box and has a spring F, the tension of which serves to normally hold the rod to the limit of its upward movement and to return it to this position when depressed, as hereinafter described. Although the spring may be arranged in various ways, I have shown it in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 as consisting of a helix coiled around the rod and seated between the lug F and the head or knob E.
The upper edge of the piece 0, forming the front wall of the chamber a, terminates a short distance below the top or cover thereof and is beveled outwardly, as shown at c, as
is also the upper edge of the reciprocating slide D, which works against the rear surface thereof, and when at the limit of its upward movement said beveled edge is slightly above the beveled edge 0'. Secured to the front face of the Wall 0 is a piece G, forming a small trough g, designed to receive a single match lengthwise therein. In this piece G is a vertical slot h, in which is a horizontally-reciprocating slide or follower H. Connected to this follower is a cord I or other suitable flexible medium, which extends to and passes over a small grooved wheel 6 near the forward edge of the box, thence downwardly, and made fast to the vertically-reciprocating slide D. Said slide or follower II also has connected thereto a link 76, to which is connected one end of a spring K, made fast in the box at its lower portion. The cord I and link it are usually connected to the follower at its central portion to prevent binding by means of a pin or projection 19, and when this connection is employed a longitudinal slot Z is provided through the wall of the guide-slot h to allow said pin to slide therein during the reciprocation of the slide H.
The box or casing forming the safe is designed to be placed upon a table or counter or any other suitable place desired and the receptacle therein supplied with matches.
When the rod is depressed, the downward movement of the slide D by means of the connection I will move the follower H forwardly, forcing the match lying in the trough g outwardly, bringing its igniting end in contact with a small roughened spring P or other suitable device secured at the forward end of said trough and igniting it. When so lighted, it may be removed by the fingers or the cigar or other article applied thereto.
The springs F and K, respectively, immediately return the rod and slide to their normal positions. In its upward movement the upper edge of the slide D catches another match, which falls over its beveled edge and the edge 0 into the trough g, ready to be thrown out and ignited by a subsequent depression of the rod. A small hole, provided with a guide or guard m, is formed in the outer casing adjacent to the forward end of the trough g, through which the ignited match is thrown.
The operating mechanism, with the exception of the projection of the operating-rod and its spring, is inclosed in the box, and the latter may be arranged to be also inclosed therein, if desired. 5 A suitable hinged cover M is provided in the top of the box to permit the filling of the receptacle.
In Fig. 4 I have'shown a modified form, wherein the spring F and the lug F are done away with. In place of the spring K a lever K is employed, which is designed to be retracted by the action of a spring K The retraction of this arm will bring both slides to their normal positions.
[5 In Fig. 5 I have shown another modification, wherein a clock-spring R is employed to return the slides to their normal positions.
It is evident that still other arrangements of springs might be provided, which are not shown, and I do not desire, therefore, to limit myself to any particular arrangement of such springs.
Having described this invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 2 5 Patent, is-- 1. The match-safe comprising the case having the matchu'eceptacle at its upper portion, the rear wall of said chamber being inclined downwardly and inwardly to the bottom, the latter terminating a short distance from the front wall and leaving an interval or space thereat, the slide reciprocating vertically in said space, the horizontal trough designed .to receive a single match at a time under the 5 action of said slide, the follower reciprocating horizontally in said trough to 'eject the match therefrom, the operating knob or handle, and the retracting-springs, substantially as specified.
2. The match-safe comprising the case hav- 4o ing the match-receptacle at its upper portion at one side thereof, a slide reciprocating vertically through one side portion of said receptacle and designed in its upward movement to carry a single match over the forward wall of 5 said receptacle, the horizontal trough adapted to receive said match in a lengthwise position therein, the follower reciprocating horizontally in said trough and operated by the vertically-reciprocating slide to eject said match, means for igniting said match by its ejection, and the operating-knob and retracting springs, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with. the case or receptacle having the match-receptacle therein, 5 5 of the slide designed to reciprocate vertically through one side of said chamber, the operatingknob connected to said slide, the matchreceiving trough, the slide or follower reciprocating therein and connected with the vertical slide in such a manner as to operate therewith, means for automatically igniting the match as it is ejected, and the retractingsprings, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I attix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN R. LAND.
