COUPLIN` FOR OIL-WELL PUMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,621 dated January 7, 1896. Application filed September 7,1895. Serial No. 561,814. (No model.)
To LZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. RALsToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wittens, in the county of Monroe and State of by the pumping-rod may be coupled by the attendant without leaving the floor of the derrick.
lVith this object in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l illustrates a portion of the walking-beam and the upper end of the pump-rod, the two being connected by my improved coupler. Fig. 2 is a view at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view centrally through the same parts.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the end of a walking-beam, and 2 the coupler. The coupler consists of a bar 3, doubled upon itself to form the members 4, which are twisted about midway their length, as shown at 5. Pintles 6, projecting from the sides of the members 4, extend through the upper end of the coupler and are clamped between the bifurcated end of the walking-beam and a plate 7 by a clamp 8. Bolted to the lower end of the bar is a cross-cleat 9, recessed on its upper rear side to form, in conjunction with'the bars of the coupler, V-shaped seats.
1() denotes plates which are arranged on the opposite sides of the bars of the coupler and which are clamped thereto by a bolt 1l, which extends through the plates and through the elongated slot between the bars and has a nut 12 screwed upon its rear end.
14. denotes a bar which is adapted to be clamped between the cleat and the forward plate. This bar has a beveled lower edge which iits into the V-shaped recess above referred to and is also provided with a aring aperture 16, through which passes a bolt 17 having an enlarged perforated head 18.
19 denotes a pumping-rod which has a groove 20. The groove of this rod is engaged by the perforated head 18 and the nut is tightened, thus firmly clamping the pump-rod to the bar 14, the said rod fitting into registering recesses 21 formed in the bar.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation of the device will be readily understood without requiring further explanation.
It will be apparent that by this construction the pump-rod may be readily attached to and detached from the walking-beam without necessitating the attendant leavin g the platform or derrick,thus saving much time and trouble.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A coupler of the character described, comprisin g parallel bars connected at one end and separated to form a slot therebetween, a cleat secured to the lower ends of said bars and provided with a beveled inner face, plates secured above said cleat by aibolt and nut, a bar having a beveled lower edge to engage the beveled edge of said cleat, said bar having an aperture, and a bolt extending through said aperture and provided with an aperture for the pump rod and with a nut for drawing the pump rod tightly against said bar, substantially as set forth. y
