CULTE@- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented .April 3, 1906.
Application lecl October 7,1905. Serial No. 281,819.
To a/Z whom rit may concern:
Beit known that I, J on'N MOELLER, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Bay lort, in the county of Huron and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Colters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plow attachments, being designed especially for use in connection with colters, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple and inexpensive device of the character described whereby the colter may be firmly attached to the plow and one whereby the colter may be quickly adjusted in a vertical plane or in a direction longitudinally of the plow-beam and readily secured. in its adjusted. position.
With these and. other objects in view the inventioncomprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow equipped with an attachment embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section centrally through the bearing member. Fig. 3 is a section. taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, l1 designates a plow having a beam 2, these parts being of the usual construction and material and adapted in practice to perform their ordinary functions.
Attached to the beam 2 by means of fastening members or bolts 3 is a tubular bearing member or'socket 4, provided at its upper end with oppositely-disposed laterally-projecting portions or lugs 5 of wedge shape .in cross-section to present lower inclined faces 6, adapted to bear on the correspondinglyinclined faces 7 of clip members or plates 8, with which the bolts 3 are engaged, while formed in one side face of the member 4 is a groove or channel 9, terminating at its lower end. in a pair of spaced bearing-ears 10, between which is pivoted au operating member or lever 11, engaged at its lower end with a locking member or pin 12, extended transversely through the member 4, the side walls of which are provided with perforations 13 to receive the pin, which is normally maintained in locking position. by means of a spring 14, arranged in the groove 9, and secured inplace by means of a pin 15, engaged at its end with the seen in Fig. 4.
Disposed in advance of the plow 1 is a mem'- bei' or colter 15, having a shank or standard 16 seated in the bearing member 4 and provided with a vertically-spaced series of transversc openings or perforations 17, any one of which may be brought to register with the openings 13 for the reception of the locking member or pin 12 to secure the standard against movement, it being noted in this connection that the Vmember 4 constitutes, in eFect, a section or continuation of the standard.
In practice, when it is desired to adjust the standard 16 for varying the` depth of the member or colter relative to the ground-sur face, the vupper end of the lever 11 is swung inward against action of spring 14, thus moving the locking-pin .12 outward in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 4, wlicreupon the standard may be moved freely upward or downward to the properlyadjusted position and again locked by means of the pin 11, which will be automatically returned to locking position under the'action of spring 14 on the lever 11 upon release of the latter, it being understood that in adjusting the p arts different ones of the perforations 17 will be brought .into register with the openings 13. Ready adjustment of the bearing member 4 in a direction longitudinally ofthe beam 2 for properly positioning the colter relative to the plow may be effected byloosening the bolts 3, the inclined faces of the lugs 7 and clip-plates 8 serving in this connection for properly clamping the bearing member to the beam when the bolts 3 are tightened.
From the foregoing it is apparent that .l produce a simple. and inexpensive device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view, it being understood that minor changes in the details herein set forth may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what .l claim as new is l. In a device of the class described, a tubular bearing .member adapted for connection thereto and provided with projecting lugs having .inclined lower faces, clip-plates having correspondingly-inclined 'Lipper faces designed to bear on the inclined faces of the lugs, connecting-bolts engaged with the clipplates and j peratively engaged with the walls of the groove, as
ICO
beam for attaching the bearing member thereto, a colter-shank arranged for longitudinal adjustment in said member, and means for xing the shank in its adjusted positions.
2. In a device of the class described, a beam, a tubular bearing member connected therewith and having a longitudinal groove, an operating-lever pivoted to said bearing member, a locking-key extended transversely through the latter and connected with the lever, a shank arranged for longitudinal movement in the bearing member and provisioned with a plurality of openingsto receive the lockingkey, a spring seated in the groove and designed to act on the lever for maintainingtheA key normally in locking position, and a springretaining pin extended transversely of the groove and terminally engaged with the Wheels thereof.
In testimony whereof I a'hx my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN h/IOELLER.
