SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,016, dated February 21, 1882.

To all whom tt may concern Be it known that I, ELIAS HoXIE, of Red Creek, in the county ot' Wayne and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in (Phill-Couplings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification.

'lhis invention consists of an adjustable brace, secured to the under side of the thill and to the bolt by which the coupling is accomplished, the object being to prevent noise by the rattling of the parts against each other.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved thill-coupling. Figs. 2 and 3 vare detail views, and Fig.

- 4 is a longitudinal section through Fig. 1.

The brace A is made by reducing one end of ak straight piece of iron so as to vform a stem, on which is cut a screw-thread to receive a nut, D. The other end ofthe iron is then split' toward the stem, and the prongs thus formed are bent apart in a rectangular or curvilinear shape, and holes are drilled in the ends of the prongs to receive the bolt ot' the clip, by which the thill is coupled to the axle.

A bracket, B, made of iron, having a hole through the center and a-screw-threaded stem, is secured to the under side of the thill-iron 3o C, so as to project downward at right angles thereto. If desired, the bracket may be welded clailn as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a thill-coupling, of an adjustable brace secured to the thill and connected to the bolt of the coupling, substantially as'shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The brace A, having a threaded stem at one end and perforated prongs at the other, in combination with a nut, D, screwed on said stem, a bracket, B, for holding said stem, the

thill-iron (fr, and the boltof the coupling-joint,

substantially as shown and described, whereby the brace may be adjusted to take up wear,
