Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
CHAS. J. MALLON, OF SCHOHARIE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED SAD-IRON.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,570, dated May 8, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, C. J. MALLON, of Schoharie, in the county of Schoharie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attaching Handles to Sad- Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which wil-l enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, forming a part ot' this specitication, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my inven.- tion, with certain portions broken away. Fig. 2 is a view of the under side of the handle, showing the mode of attaching it to the standards or arms of the iron.
Similar letters `of reference indicate like parts.
My invention relates to a novel mode ot' attaching the handle of a sad-iron, which has suspended from it a shield for protecting the hand against the heat radiating from the iron, to standards or arms secured to the body of the iron, whereby the handle and shield may be detached from one iron and quickly attached to another, as will be presently described.
A designates the body of a sad-iron, which may be of any approved shape or form. To the top of the iron A two metallic standards or arms, B B. are permanently secured, having a curve similar io the corresponding parts of an ordinary sad-iron.' The tops of these standards are bent over on a horizontal line,
. and then on a vertical line, as designated re- E is a button, which is pivoted at or near its center to the handle C, so as to be turned parallel with or at angles to the handle C. The handle G, carrying the shield D, is applied by placing it down upon the bent-over portions c of the standards B, so that the two rods c c will pass down through the slots in the ends of the standards. The handle is then locked to the standard by swinging around the button E, so that its two ends will press against the under sides of ythe portionsI c a ot' the standards, and thus hold or clamp the handle C to the standards B.
I am aware that a patent was granted to P. D. Von Heesen on the 8th of January, 1861, for an improved sad-iron, where he used a `wooden shield to protect the hand from the heat which radiates from the iron, said shield being attached to a removable handle; but his means of attaching the handle to the iron is entirely 4different from mine.
I do not, therefore, claim the use ot' a shield or of a detachable handle; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- 1. Attaching the handle G, carrying a suspended shield, to the standard B by means of the button E, pivoted to the under side thereof, in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
2. The combination and arrangement of the handle C, standards B, arms c,button E, shield D, and body A, constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose herein specilied.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 23d day of January, 1866.
G. J. MALLON.
