FOOT-WARMER.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES I'IURLBUT WHITAKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bordentown, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Foot-Warmer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved foot warmer more especially designed for use in carriages and other vehicles and places, and arranged to permit the use of lap robes without danger of setting tire to the same or causing overheating.

The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, whichwill be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

A practical embodiment of the invention is repre;

sented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.

Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same.

On a, suitably constructed base A is secured the font B of a lantern B of any approved construction, preferably, however, of the Dietz or tubular type, as illustrated in the drawings.

The lantern B is provided with a suitable burner B a chimney B resting at its lower end on the chimney supporting plate Bcarried by the burner B The foot warmer proper consists of a copper or other metallic heat induction plate C having its middle portion 0 bent into an inverted U-shaped form and extending within the chimney B and over the flame of the burner, so that the heat thereof heats the said middle portion G. The side arms of the middle portion 0 extend downward throughthe supporting plate B to the outside of the lantern, and the lower ends of the said side arms terminate in outwardly extending flanges C overlying the top of the base A and, preferably, covered by metallic covering plates D. Now, when the lantern is in use the heat of the flame of the burner B heats the middle portion 0 and this heat is conducted to the outside of the lantern and to the flanges G which in turn heat the covering plates D, and hence when a person places the feet on the said covering plates D, it is evident that the feet are heated from the heat emanating from the flanges O and the covering plates D.

From the foregoing it willbe seen that the plate G has a heat receiving portion within the chimney B of the lantern and heat delivering portions outside of the lantern and below the flame of the burner.

The device shown and described is very simple and durable in construction and can be readily applied to various forms of lanterns as now used.

By having the flanges C a distance from or below the flame of the burner it is evident that perfect safety is insured, and the foot warmer can be readily set into carriages or other vehicles and used with perfect safety, at the same time allowing the use of lap robes so as to keep the person perfectly warm in the lower extremities, as the heat radiating from the lantern itself serves to heat the legs on opposite sides of the lantern.

The base A is made of wood or other non-heat-conducting material to prevent radiation and loss of heat in a downward direction and thus allowing all the heat of the heat conducting plate 0 to pass to the covering plates D on which rest the feet of the user.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. .A foot warmer, comprising a base, a lantern mounted thereon, a U-shaped conducting plate arranged above the flame, the arms of the plate extending outside of the Ian tern and resting on the base.

2. A fcot warmer, comprising a base, a lantern mounted thereon, a conducting plate extending over the flame of the lantern and to the outside thereof, the exterior portion being on top of the base, and covering plates attached to the base and extending over the outer portions of the conducting plate.

3. A foot warmer, comprising a base, a lantern mounted thereon, and a metal plate having an inverted U-shaped heat-receiving portion within the lantern and heated by the flame thereof, the metal plate also having an exterior portion resting on the said base.

4. A foot warmer, comprising a base, a lantern mounted thereon, and a metal plate having an inverted U-shaped heat receiving portion within the lantern and heated by the flame thereof, the lower ends of the said heat receiving portion terminating in heat delivering flanges extending in opposite directions from the lantern and overlying the top of the said base.

5. A foot warmer provided with a lantern, and a metal plate having an inverted U shaped heat receiving portion and heat delivering flanges, the said heat receiving portion having its middle part extending over the flame of the burner within the chimney of the lantern, and the side arms of the said heat receiving portions extending downward on opposite sides of the flame and through the bottom of the lantern burner to the outside of the lantern, the said side arms terminating in the said flanges extending outwardly in opposite directions from the said lantern.
