} UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NOAH P. CHAFFEE, ()F ATHENS, PENNSYLVANIA.
BU RG LAR-ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,407, dated July 9, 1895.
- Application filed April 13, 1895. Serial No. 545,564- (No model.)
To all whom iv may concern.-
Be it known that I, NOAH P. CHAFFEE, of Athens, in the county of Bradford, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and use fulImprovementsinBurglar-Alarms,of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and, exact description.
My invention relates to burglar-alarms, and particularly to that class which are adapted to be removably mounted upon a door or window casing and adapted to be actuated to sound an alarm by the'opening of the door or window, which engages with and trips the mechanism.
My object is toproduce an improved burglar-alarm of the nature of a firearm, and
consisting in a barrel recessed to receive a cartridge, a swinging breech-block to close tion, suitably recessed to receive a cartridge v the rear end of the barrel, a combined hammer and mainsprin g mounted upon the barrel in such manner that it can be set and cooked by swinging it upon a pivot, and means, as a screw connected to the barrel, for mounting, the barrel upon a door or Window casing, all so arranged that when the door or window-sash is opened it will engage with the hammer, and trip it, so that it will strike a .blow upon the firing-pin and explode the cartridge, and thus the report will be the alarm.
My invention consists in the several novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the claim hereunto annexed.
It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation, the dotted lines showing the hammer cocked. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the barrel, the dotted lines showing the breech-block open. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the alarm cocked and also showing a different style of firing-pin.
A is the barrel, of any ordinary construcor cartridge-blank.
a is a breech-block pivoted upon the pin or screw 1) and flanged substantially as at c to. engage with a notch or recess in the barrel. A firing-pin d or e is suitably mounted in or upon the breech-block.
A link h fits loosely around the barrel and at one end is pivotally connected to the head of the screw k, said head having a lip m, which has a bearing in a seat in the barrel. The other end of said link is suitably connected to one arm n of the combined hammer and mainspring n, which is bifurcated, substantially as shown, and the other arm has a bearing upon or in the barrel, and n is the head which engages with the firing-pin to explode the cartridge, which may be either center-fire or rim-fire.
It will be readily seen that when the hammer is raised to the position shown by the full lines in Fig. 3 the link will hold it in that position cocked, and when it is pushed over, as soon as it reaches a certain point the tension upon one or both arms will impel it to strike a'sharp blow upon the firing-pin to fire off the cartridge.
By inserting the screw into the casing of a door or window in such position that the door or window will strike the cooked hammer when opened the hammer will be tilted thereby out of its double bearing upon the barrel and past the center, produce the springtension, and fire the cartridge.
v Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination with a barrel, a breechblock pivoted thereon to open or close the breech and looking into it, a firing pin mounted in or upon said breech-block, of amain springandfiring hammer combined, bifurcated substantially as shown, one arm having a bearing upon a link around the barrel, and
a hammer head integral with and created by bending the solid body of the main spring beyond its bifurcation, angularly to reach over the breech-block and engage with the firing pin, and a screw pivoted upon said link and having a head provided with a lip engaging with a recess in the barrel, for mounting the alarm upon the jamb of a casing so that NOAH P. orrAFFEE.
In presence 'of.-
O. W. SMITH, HOWARD P. DENISON.
