A UNITED STATES ATENT FFrcE.
HORACE BRADFORD RRAY, OF GAINESVILLE, TEXAS.
BURGLAR-ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 347,086, dated August 10, 1886.
Application filed May 19, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that'I, HORACE BRADFORD BRAY, of Gainesville, in the county of Cooke and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertainsflto make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in burglar-alarms; and it consists in the combination of the door provided with a rod for catching under the spring, a cylinder for receiving powder, a spring-actuated cover for the end of the cylinder, and a Spring which explodes the cap, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a burglar-alarm which will make a loud noise when the door is opened, andin which aspringactuated cover is made to take the place of a wad or ball.
Figure l is a front view of an alarm embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken through the cylinder.
A represents a door, and B the casing upon each side thereof. Secured to the door is a metallic plate, 0, upon which is pivoted the lever D, for operating the spring which explodes the cap. This lever is held in a horizontal position by the catch E, which projects outward from the plate G. As long as it is desired that the lever shall operate the alarm when the door is opened, this lever is kept in a horizontal position by means of the catch; but when the alarmis not to be operated by the opening of the door, the lever is swung around upon its pivot, so as to hang vertically, as shown, and thus not operate the spring.
Secured to the casing of the door "is a metallic plate, G, upon which the cylinder H is either formed as a part thereof or secured thereto in any suitable manner. This cylinder is to hold a charge of powder or other explosive, which is to be exploded by the strik ing. of the spring H against the cap upon the nipple I when the lever forces the spring outward as the door is opened. The nipple I is Serial No. 202,643. (No model.)
formed upon an extension on the cylinder, which extension has an opening through it so as to communicate directly with the end of the cylinder. As the door is being opened, the lever forces the spring outward until the lever slips from under the end of the spring, and the spring then strikes the cap as it rebounds and explodes the charge of powder in the cylinder.
On the under side of the cylinder are formed the ears J, between which the cover L is pivoted. This cover has an extension which pro jects outward as far as the end of the ears, and under this extension on the cover is placed a spiral spring, N, which serves to keep the cover constantly closed upon the cylinder. This cover serves to close the end of the cylinder and to take the place of a wad or ball, and thus cause a loud report to be made without in any wise endangering life, or being liable to set the house on .fire by means of a lighted wad. This cover confines the powder and prevents it from either dropping out of the cylinder, or simply flashing without making any report when set off. \Vhere a ball is used, innocent persons are sometimes injured, and where wads are used the burning wad is thrown upon the door and is liable to set the house on fire. This cover serves to cause a loud explosion, and thus takes the place of either a wad or ball, which has heretofore been used. The end of the lever and the end of the spring being beveled, the door closes without any interference.
Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim- 1. In a burglar-alarm, the combination of the cylinder or receptacle in which the powder is placed,withaspring-actuated cover-,aud a spring or device for exploding the cap, substantially as shown.
2. The combination of thelever, thespring, the cylinder provided with a nipple, and a springeactuated cover applied to the cylinder, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HORACE BRADFORD BRAY.
