IMPROVEMENT IN BURGLAR-ALARMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,416, dated October 23, 1877 application filed September 24,1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, B. NORMAN BAILEY, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Burglar- Alarms, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to an improvement in the burglaralarm for which Letters Patent No. 193,210 were granted to my assignees on the 17th day of July, 187 7 and the object of my improvement is to adapt the instrument for use in connection with doors which open either to the right or to the left.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved burglaralarm; Fig. 2, a side view; and Figs. 3 and 4, plan views, representing the use of the alarm in connection with doors opening to the right and to the left.

The hammer A is partly contained within, and pivoted to, a metal box, B, which also contains a suitable spring for insuring the descent of the hammer, when released, with sufficient force to explode the fulminating-cap, which is placed'on the projection a, and retained in position by beveled lugs.

To a pin, m, on the top of the box is pivoted the duplex trigger D, which consists of a bellcrank lever, having two arms, (Z and (1, precisely alike, each arm being bent at the end, so as to catch the pin 6 on the upper edge of the hammer, and thereby retain the latter in anelevated position.

I preferto retain the lever in its position on the box by a bend of the pivot-pin, as best observed in Fig. 1, as this is the most econombe thrust into the jamb of the door, and the latter for bearing against the face of the jamb,

and thereby so 'trussing the instrument that it will be sufficiently steady under the shock caused by the descent of the hammer.

In Fig. 3 the instrument is attached to the jamb aon the right of the door 3 which, on being forced open in the direction of the arrow, will strike the arm d of the lever and cause the arm (I to release the hammer.

In Fig. 4, where the instrument is secured to the jamb on the left of the door, the arm (1 of the lever is the hammer-retainer, while the arm dis presented to the door. In some cases it may be advisable to-attach the instrument to the door, instead of to the jamb; and it may,

if desirable, be attached to windows as well as to doors.

I claim as my invention-- The combination of the hammer of a burglar-alarm with the duplex trigger D, substanti ally as described.
