NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIP J. LONERGAN, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
ovERALLs. l f
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,052, dated October 3, 1893.
Application tiled April 20, 1893. Serial No. 471 153. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, PHILIP JAMES LoNER- GAN, of Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented a new and usefulImprovement in Overalls` of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of my invention to provide overalls which may be put. on or taken oif with greater facility than those made in the ordinary way.
To this end, I make them open on both sides for their entire length, and provide them with fastenings which may be easily and quickly connected and disconnected, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved overalls, showing the divided sides connected by selfengaging fastenings. Fig. 2 is a side View of the upper part of the overalls. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view, and Fig. 4 is a Aside view of a portion of one leg of the overalls, the front lapping edge being turned back and showing one of the buttons.
The overalls are divided their entire length,
'on each side, instead of being closed at that point, as usual heretofore. In other words, the legs and waist portion are open ou each side, from top to bottom, in a straight line, and the front edges, a, made to overlap the rear edges, b, as shown in Fig. l. The back portion of the waist is provided with a wellknown form of tongue, c, which is intended to extend under the front portion, and to be secured by a button when the overalls are in use. The front portion of the waist is similarly provided with a tongue, d, which performs a new function, it being used as a pull-piece as hereinafter described. When thus constructed the overalls are formed with the body portion having the front and back section joined at the crotch, and the leg sections, the body and leg sections being separated at their outer edges from top to bottom as before described.
For the purpose of closing, or securing together, the lapping edges cab, of the open sides, I employ a snap, or button, one part, e, of which is attached tothe front edge, a, and the other part, e', to the rear edge b, as shown.
To apply or put on the overalls, the crotch portion is drawn up into proper position, between the legs of the wearer, and then, beginning at the top, the fastenings are successively closed-that is to say, the two parts e, e', of the buttons are connected, which is effected by simply bringing them into the required coincidence and then pressing them together. This operation is very easily and quickly eected, and, it is obvious the reverse, or disconnection of the parts, may be effected almost instantaneously, by seizing the pullpieces d, d, attached to the waist front, and pulling outward and downward, by which action the fastenings separate without difficulty, so that the overalls may be detached by one simple and easy movement. The overalls may thereforebe applied withoutremoving boots or shoes, and with equal ease even if the pants be wet. In brief, the advantages of this construction of overalls,in the ease and rapidity of application and removal of the same, are so greatas to commend them for general adoption.
Save in the particulars above described, the overalls may be constructed in the usual manner; that is to say, they may have the usual iiy, pockets, suspender buttons, back strap, &c.
What I claim isl. Overalls or a similarbifurcated garment formed with front and rear body sections and with leg sections, the front and rear body sections being joined at the crotch the body and leg sections being separated at their outer edges from top tol bottom and provided at such edgesiwith fastenings substantially as set forth.
2. The improved overalls herein described and shown consisting of the body portion, and leg portions open from top to bottom along the outer edges of said portions, providedv along said edges with separable fastenings and provided at the opposite ends of thefront section of its waist portion with extended pull pieces all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
