UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE BENSON, or BELFAST, IRELAND.
"APP AlREL-CUFF.
Q SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,223, dated April 30, 1889.
Application filed January 28, 1889, Serial No. 297,796. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE BENsON, of Belfast, Ireland, in the Kingdom of Great Britain, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cuffs, of which the following is a specification. I
I .will describe a cuff embodying my i1nprovement in detail, and then point out the novel features in claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face view of a cuff embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is atransverse section of the same,.taken' on the plane of the dotted linea: ac,Fig. 1, and showing a portion of the wristband to which the cuff is attached. Fig. 3 is a detail showing a portion of a flap or apron comprised in the cuff, and Fig.4 is a front View showing the cuff attached to a shirtwristband.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates the body of the cuff. The cuff is what is known as a reversible cuff.
I have shown button-holes a near its ends,
adapted to receive links or studs. These button-holes may, however, be omitted, and a tongue, 0, be used provided with a buttonhole, f, adapted to register with abutton-hole, in1the cuif, as shown in dotted outline in B B designate a flap or apron. This flap or apron is secured at its inner edge to the body of the cuff at about midway in the width of the latter, and is of nearly the same length at its inner edge as the body of the cuff. It is attached to the outside face of the body of the cuff. The flap or apron comprises two end portions, B, and a central portion, B, united at, its ends to the portions B. I prefer that the end portions, B, should be thicker than the portion B as, for instance, the end portions may be two or more ply, while the central portion may be but one'plyl The outer edge of the flap or apronis free, so that the flap or apron may be turned in either direction over against the face of the cuff. The outer edge of the central portion, B, is longer than the inner edge thereof, so that the central portion is full. This is accomplished by cutting the central portion semicircular, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3. The end portions, B, act as stiffeners for the flap. The central portion, B, may likewise be provided with a stiffener, if desired. I have shown such an arrangement in dotted outline in Fig. 1.
As shown, the portionsB of the flap or apron are provided with button-holes a near their lower edges, which will register or approximately register with the button-holes a in the body of the cuif when the flap or apron is folded down. The button-holes c,when used, need not, however, register with the buttonholes a, as the cuff may be attached to the wristband of a shirt by passing buttons through the button-holes a only and through suitable button-holes in the wristband. It may also be secured by passing buttons through the button-holes a only and through the button-holes in the wristband. The flap or apron may have a button-hole, d, in the central portion, B, as shown in dotted outline in Fig. 1, if desirable.
In Figs. 2 and 4 I have shown the wristband of a shirt attached tothe cuff. D designates the wristband. It extends between the flap or apron B B and the body ofthe cuff. In this case buttons 7t pass through both the button-holes c a to secure the cuif to the wristband.
The cuff eifectually conceals the wristband of the shirt. The portion B ofthe flap or apron gives the cuff the appearance of being attached directly to a shirt-sleeve and not to a shirt-band. Of coursewhen the cuff is reversed the fiap or apron is to be reversed.
By making the portion B of the flap thinner than the end portions, B, the said flap, when placed upon the wristband, not only causes the cufi to present the appearance of forming a part of the wristband, but it also provides for the ready yielding or bending of the flap about the wristband. This latter function is facilitated by the method of cutting the central portion, B, of the flap so that it is longer upon its outer edge than it is upon its inner edge, as the flap may, when placed upon the wristband, be brought around-and buttoned very easily, as shown more clearly inFig. 4.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A reversible cuff having an attached flap or a ron 4 said flap or a ron bein rovided with a thin flexible central portion and end A reversible eufi'f havinga-n attached flap portions thicker than said central portion, or apron, said flap or apron being provided substantially as specified. with a thin flexible central portion and end 2. A reversible cuffihaving an attached flap portions thicker than said central portion, 5 or apron, said flap or apron being provided said central portionbeing made 111 SGmlCll'Cll- 15 with a thin flexible central portion and end lar form, substantially as specified.
portions thicker than said central portion, the GEORGE BENSON. central portion being longer upon its outer lVitnesses: edge than upon its inner edge, substantially JNO. M. SAVAGE,
0 as specified. 1 M0. D. COOKE.
