UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TOM B. FELL AND JOSEPH C. FELL, OF LEWISPORT, KENTUCKY.
OVERALLS.
Application filed January 19, 1911.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, TOM B. Pam. and JOSEPH C. PELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Lewisport, in the county of Hancock, State of Kentucky, have in- Vented certain new and useful Improvements in Overalls; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to overalls, and particularly to those of the bibtype.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of an improved construction of overalls whereby the garment will be positively supported upon the body when the rear flap is detached from the bib and the shoulder straps detached from their connection with the rear flap.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views; and in which,
Figure 1 is a rear view of an overall garment constructed in accordance with the invention with the rear flap detached from the bib and from the supporting strap, the lower portion of the legs of the overalls being removed; Fig. 2, a front view of what is shown in Fig. 1 with the parts of the garment in the position they would normally occupy upon the body of the wearer; Fig. 3, a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and, Fig. 4, a detail perspective view of the de tachable supporting strap.
Referring to the drawings, the overalls constructed in accordance with the invention are shown as comprising leg sections 10 and 11, a front flap 12 and a rear flap 13. This rear flap has a reinforced free edge which is provided intermediately with buttonholes 14.- disposed longitudinally of the garment, while the ends of said reinforced free edge are extended laterally and provided with buttonholes '15 extending transversely of the garment. The buttonholes 15 are adapted to be interlocked with buttons 16 secured to opposite sides of the bib 12 respectively.
In order to positively sustain the garment upon the wearer when the rear flap is detached from the bib, there is provided a supporting strap 17 having secured to the intermediate port-ion thereof a plurality of buttons 18 adapted to be positioned in the button holes 14 respectively of the rear flap. This strap is further provided at each end witheye members 19 which are adapted to be looped over the buttons 16 of the bib previous t0 the passage of said buttons through the buttonholes 15 of the rear flap so as to permit the detachment of the rear flap from thebib without necessitating the detachment of the eye members 19 from the buttons 16.
The garment as a whole is sustained upon the body of the wearer by means of shoulder straps 20, one end of each of which is provided with a buttonhole 21 for engagement with a button 18 of the strap 17 previous to the passage of said button into a buttonhole 14 of the rear flap so that the latter may be detached from the strap 17 without necessitating the detachment of the shoulder straps 20 from said strap. The other end of each of the straps 20 is looped and secured to the intermediate portion by means of an adjusting buckle 22 whereby said straps may be lengthened and shortened as desired. Supported in the looped ends of each of the shoulder straps 20 is an eye member 23 which is adapted to be detachably engaged with buttons 24: disposed at the upper end of the front flap 12.
From the foregoing construction, it will be apparent that when the overalls are completely assembled upon the body of the wearer, the rear flap 13 may be detached from the strap 17 and from the front flap 12 without in any manner causing the removal of the remaining portion of the overalls from the body, the strap 17 and the shoulder straps 20 serving to effectively support the entire garment in precisely the same manner as it was supported before the detachment of the rear flap from the strap 17.
It will be noted that the construction of overalls heretofore described is not only useful in properly sustaining the overalls but in cases where trousers are worn beneath the same, they will enable the wearer to dispense with suspenders for the purpose of supporting the trousers. This is done by slipping the ends of the strap through the trousers worn beneath the overalls, it is preferable that said strap be permanently attached to the rear flap of the overalls.
While the strap has been shown as secured to the rear flap of the overalls by a button and buttonhole connection, it will be apparent that the same may be also connected to said rear flap by means of snap buttons and also that the ends of the strap may have buttonholes and that said strap may if desired be made with length adjusting-buckles or other adjusting devices and provided intermediately with an elastic whereby to allow it to give to the motions of the wearer.
What is claimed is An overall garment including front and rear flaps, a strap detachably secured to the rear flap and having its terminals connected to the front flap, and shoulder straps each having one end secured to the strap and their other end provided with means for detachable connection to the front flap.
In testimony whereof, we aifix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
