UNDERWAIST.

ANDREW B.GRAHAM PHOT0-LITHO .WASHlNGTDN.D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES C. ANDREWS, OF NEW I-IAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
U NDERWAIST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,551, dated November 26, 1895.
Application filed September 19, 1894. Renewed October 24, 1895. Serial No. 566,786. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES C. ANDREWS, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a newImprovement in Underwaists; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, an elevation of one side of my improved waist constructed with an auxiliary hip-section or cover, a portion of the lower edge of the said cover being broken away; Fig. 2, a section on the line a b of Fig. 1.
My invention relates to an improvement in underwaists, and particularly to that class which is adapted to support various articles of underwear.
It is my object to produce a waist simple and cheap in construction, to which ordinary stocking-supporters may be applied, so that the strain therefrom may come directly upon the shoulders.
WVith these ends in view my invention consists in a waist having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
As herein shown, the underwaist A, of suit-' able shape, is constructed with a band B, which extends from the lower edge of the waist forward of the hip-section, as at C, over the shoulder-piece D, and thence returns to the said lower edge of the waist in the rear of the hip-section, as at E. Between the waist A and the band B, at a point above the waist-line at F F, I attach the upper ends of a V-shaped support-band G, the lowest point of which is directly below the arm-holes and extends a little below the lower edge of the waist. The folds of the band G are united by a tie-band H, forming a loop H. To the lowest point of the V-shaped band G the hose or garment support, which may be of any approved pattern, may be attached either through the loop H or to a button J, which is secured in position by a tie-band H.
It can be seen that the form of supporter may be changed without affecting my invention, it being apparent that various forms may be readily attached to the band G. The waist is provided with a transverse band or cover K, which is designed to protect the lower end of the band G, the ends of said cover being firmly secured at K K to the waist by the band B. To'the cover K are attached the buttons L and L which are usually attached to the waist at the hip. To support the said cover and buttons thereon, a band L is securely attached to the waist from the armhole down to a point just below the upper edge of the said cover, where it terminates in the buttonhole or loop M, adapted to receive the button L, detachably uniting the upper edge of the cover K to the waist.
By constructing my waist in the manner herein shown the weight of the garment which may be attached to the support-band G is taken by the shoulders through it connection with the band B at F F. By attaching the ends of the band at a point close to the armhole I avoid the tendency to drag the shoulder-piece from the shoulders and down upon the arms, which is common in other waists heretofore made.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein described underwaist, constructed with bands extending from its lower edge over the shoulders, a support secured to the said waist above the hip and depending to the lower edge of the waist, and with a transverse band secured by its side edges to said waist over the lower portion of the said hip section, and the support, and so as to leave an opening between it and the waist at the top and bottom, the upper edge of said band detachably connected to the waist, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES C. ANDREWS. Witnesses:
Gno. D. SEYMOUR, FRED Q. EARLE.
