THEODORE A. CALL AND RUFUS A. CLARK, OF LEWISTON, MONTANA.
STOVE-HOOD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,259, dated J une 27, 1893.
Application led July 26,1892. Serial No. 441,154. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that we, THEODORE A. CALL and RUFUs A. CLARK, citizens of the United States, residing at Lewiston, in the county of Fergus and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Stove-Hood, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stove hoods and particularly refers to that class of the same that are adjustable, and has for its object to provide a hood that may be turned up from a normal covering position so as to give free access to the top of the stove.
With this object in view the invention consists of the details of construction and arrangement of the several parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a view of the improved device in perspective shown in normal operative position. longitudinal vertical section of the device on a larger scale, shown in raised position in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a slight modification of construction, shown in raised position in dotted lines.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a stove pipe of preferred form of construction having a horizontal branch pipe 2 connected thereto and steadied in its mounting by a rod or brace 3 which is connected to said branch and to the pipe 1. The said branch-pipe 2, is supplied with a damper 4, by means of which cornmunication may be had or shut off froin the pipe 1.
To the free end of pipe 2, is movably secured an elbow 5, by a hinge 6, located at the top of both the pipe 2, and the said elbow 5. The diameter of the elbow 5 is less than the diameter of the pipe 2 and thereby the latter receives the end of the elbow to provide a close fitting and tight joint between the said parts to prevent the escape of odors at this point. To accommodate this operation, the hinge 6, is set over on the elbow beyond the end thereof. Ashort branch pipe '7, depends vertically from the lower end of the elbow Fig. 2 is a central` and thereto is secured rigidly the upper portion of a hood S. This hood is preferably of truncated pyramidal form and to the bottom portions of the sides thereof are secured strap loops 9, that project beyond the lower edges of the same, and support a rod 10, which snrronnds the said lower portion of the hood at a distance therefrom and is adapted for supporting cloths or other articles for the purpose of drying the same. When free access to the top of the stove is desired, or when the use of the device is not required, the hood can be readily turned up as shown in dotted lines, and when the device is in disuso the damper 4,is shutto prevent passage of smoke or particles of combustion through the pipe 2 into the room in which the device is located.
In Fig. 3, the pipe 2 is made shorter and the upper end of the elbow 5, is securely fastened in a rigid manner thereto. In this instance the outer portion of the lower end of said elbow is provided with a hinge 11, that is also connected to the depending vertical branch pipe 7, to adapt the hood 8, to be turned up in shorter space vertically to provide means for using the device in a room or apartment having a low ceiling. A hook 12 is movably attached to the elbow 5 in this instance, that engages a loop or eye 13 on the branch pipe 7, when the hood is lowered, and is also adapted to be engaged by a hook 14, on the top portion of the elbow when the hood is raised. The rod 10, is also adapted to be employed in this instance as fully shown.
The advantages of the device are manifold, and as will be understood it readily carries off the unpleasant vapors rising from the vegetables being cooked or other disagreeable gases from the stove which is facilitated by the draft in the pipe 1.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the-character set forth, the combination of a stove pipe, a branch pipe in connection therewith, and a hood connected to said branch pipe and having a rod supported by and surrounding the lower portion of said hood and at a distance therefrom, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character set forth, the
ICO
combination of a stove pipe, a branch pipe connected thereto and horizontally arranged, an elbow hinged in advance of its end at the upper side thereof to the said branch-pipe and of less diameter than the branch pipe, to cause the end of said elbow to fit into said branch pipe, and a hood secured to the lower end of said elbow, substantially as described.
In testimony that; we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures 1o in the presence of two witnesses.
