sT'ovl-:l-FRONT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,136, dated April 9, 1895. "Application nea my 24, 1894. sean ro. 518,482. (No maar justed to regulate the burning of the tire, andl to permit a fire to be maintained at a low heat and to be caused to burn slowly, whereby the stove may be left for a considerable length of time Without attention.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement ofparts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stove constructed in accordance with this invention, the stove door being closed. Fig.2 is a similar view, the door being open. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the front portion of the stove. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the damper.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding partsin all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates the front of the stove 2, provided around a door opening 8, with an outward extending flange 4, to which is hinged a door 5. The door opening, which may be of any desired configuration, is preferably rounded at the top and the flange 4, is arched at the top and the door conforms to the conguration of the same, and fits against the outer edge thereof. The flange 4 surrounds the door opening and prevents side drafts checking the fire when the door is open, and it has a fiat horizontal bottom portion, and the door terminates at its bottom iush with the fiat portion of the ange.
The door is provided on its inner face with a drum or casing 6, which is open at the bottom 7, and which is located slightly above the bottom 8,- of the flange 4. Air is admitted into the drum or casing near the top thereof through an opening 9. Its admission is ycontrolled by a damper 10, and it passes through the damper down the casin g and into the stove at the bottom of the casing, the inner wall being slightly cut away at 11, at the bottom to facilitate the passage. By this construction all danger of cold drafts of air being thrown suddenly into the iire and checking the latter is avoided.
In order to effect a tight joint or connection between the door and the flange when the former is closed, it is provided beyond the casing or drums 6, with a lining or covering 12, of asbestos or the like, whichenables the edge of the flange 4 to be' partially embedded in it.
The damper whichvmay be of any desired construction, preferably consists of'a cylindrical body portion 13, detachably mounted in a collar 14, and having its inner end open and provided at its outer end With an opening 15, over which works a pivoted damper Aplate 16,` having a corresponding opening and adapted to be turned to cause its opening to register with that of the body portion or to bring its solid imperforate portion over the opening of the body of the damper. The openings may be made to register partially to control the draftas desired. The collar or thimble 14, is secured to the door and extends around the opening 9.
The front of the stove is provided with a removable ash pan 17, which is arranged below and which projects slightly beyond the door to catch any ashes that may fall when the door is opened.
It will be seen that the device is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that it is positive and reliable in operation and that all liability of checking the fire by cold draft is avoided.
It will also be apparent that the fire may be readily controlled and that when the damper is entirely closed the stove may be left unattended for a considerable length of time during which interval it is unnecessary to `supply fuel.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or,
sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What I claim is- 1.` The combination with a stove having a IOC door-opening in its front, of a flange surrounding the said opening and projecting outward to form a guard against side drafts, a door hinged to one side of the said flange and adapted to swing outward, and when closed abut against the outer edge of the flange and form a closejoint therewith, a drum, or casing, attached to the inner side of the door and open at its bottom edge, which terminates a short distance from the bottom portion of the said flange, and a damper-controlled opening near the upper end of the door communieat ing with the said drum,or casing, to regulate the supply of air to the stove, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a stove having an opening in its front, and having aflange surrounding the said opening and projecting outward therefrom to form a guard against side drafts, the lower portion of the flange being flat and horizontal, of a door hinged to the said flange and adapted to swing horizontally outward, and provided near its upper end with a draft opening, a drum, or casing, secured to the inner side of the door and having its upper portion communicating with the said draft opening, the lower portion being open and terminating a short distance above the horizontal portion of the said flange, and an ash pan mounted in Ways provided on the said horizontal portion of the flange and normally having its front portion extended a short distance beyond the face of the door when the latter is closed, so as to receive ashes swept from the horizontal portion of the flange by thelower end of the said casing when opening the door, substantially as set forth.
3. The herein-specified stove front, provided with a door-opening, and having an outwardly-extending flange surrounding the said door-opening, the lower portion of the flange being flat and horizontal, a door hinged to the flange and adapted to swing horizontally outward, and provided with a draft opening near its upper end, a collar surrounding the said draft opening, aeylindrieal portion detaehably mounted within the said collar and provided with a draft-controlling damper, a casing, or drum, secured to the inner side of the door and communicating at its upper end with the draft opening, and having its lower end open and terminating a short distance above the horizontal portion of the flange, and an ash pan mounted in Ways provided on the under side of the horizontal portion of the flange and normally having its outer portion extending beyond the face of the door when the latter is closed, so as to receive ashes that may be swept from the horizontal portion of the flange by the lower end of the Said casing,
or drum, when opening the door, substantiallyv as specified.
1n testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have her'eto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
