Description

T. W. PEIRGE.
Cane-Stripper. I No. 49,786. Patented Sept 5. 1865.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
T. W. PEIRGE, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR STRIPPING CANE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,785, dated September 5, 1865.
To all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, T. W. PEIRGE, ot' Minneapolis, in the county ofHennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Device for Stripping the Leaves from Sugar-Cane; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which willenable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figures 1 and 2 are plan or top views of my invention; Fig. 3, a vertical central section of the same in an inverted position.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved device for stripping the leaves from sugar-cane preparatory to crushing and expressing the juice therefrom.
The invention consists in placing a series of radial sectionsin an annular plate and enconr passing the same with an elastic band, all arranged as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the sections are made to press against the stalks ofcane, and at the same time allowed to yield or give to accommodate themselves to the varying thicknesses of the stalks while the latter are being drawn through the central opening formed by the inner surfaces of the sections.
A represents an annular plate, which has a series ofradial grooves, a, made in it all around at equal distances apart, and of equal width throughout their entire length.
B represents a series of sections, which are composed of two parts, I) c, the parts I) being fitted in the grooves a so that they may slide freely therein, the parts 0 being at the inner ends of b and projecting upward a certain distance above the plate A, the upper end of the parts 0 of every alternate section being provided with projecting ends to lap over the parts 0 of the intermediate sections, in order to prevent the leaves of cane from passing into the spaces between the sections when the latter are pressed outward under the action of the stalks in being drawn through the opening formed by the inner ends of the sections.
The parts b of the SGOliOIlS are held in the grooves a by a ring, (I, secured on the upper surface of the plate A, and the upright parts a of the sections are encompassed by an elastic band, (J, of india-rubber or other suitable material.
The plate A is secured to a bench or any suitable fixture, and the stalks of cane are inserted one at a time and small end or tip foremost into the opening formed by the inner surfaces of the sections and drawn entirely through said opening, the sections effectually stripping theleaves from the stalks, and yielding or giving, in consequence of the elastic band 0, to conform to the varying thickness of the stalks.
The device may be constructed at an extremely small cost.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new anddesireto secure by Letters Patent- 1. The radial sections B, titted to the annular plate A, and encompassed by an elastic band, C, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Having the upper ends of the parts c of every alternate section provided with projecting ends to lap over the ends of the intermediate sections, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
T. W. PEIRCE.
