Description

FATENT Carica..
VILLIAIVI C. MCGILL, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR STRIPPING CORN FROM THE COB FOR TABLE USE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53.@49, dated April lO, 1866.
To all whom t may concern Beit known that I, WILLIAM O. MCGILL, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Machine for Shellin g or Stripping the Grains of Indian Corn from the Cob for Table Use; and I do hereby declare the following to be a I'nll, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification.
The accompanying drawing represents the lower part ot' my apparatus by axial section, and the upper part'by perspective.
A is a device which I call the ho1der, and which consists of a pan, B, having a central pin or spike, C, upon which the butt-end ofthe ear is impaled in the manner represented.
D is a circular ring, of sufficient size to pass any customary cob of table-corn or maize. The ring D has two handles, E E', which project from opposite sides of it.
Depending from the ring D are two or more springs, F F', which are each armed with a knife or stripper, G G', which conforms to the are ot' a circle, or nearly so.
Operation 'Ihe ear of boiled corn having been impaled upon the pin of the holder, the stripper is held in the position indicated in the drawing, and being thrust down over the ear acts to strip or sever the kernels, which then descend and are caught by the pan B.
I do not wish to confine myself to the precise form of springs as represented by F F', as the handles themselves may be in the form of an elliptical spring attached directly to the knives, and dispensing with the springs F F and ring D.
I claim herein as new and of my invention- The combination ofthe spiked plate with the sheller, operating substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
l/V. C. MCGILL.
Witnesses GEO. H. KNIGHT, J AMES H. LAYMAN.
