CARPET-STRETCH ER.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 18,968, dated July 25, 1865.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, H. A. MEAD, of Cuba, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garpet-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will Others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingr d rawings, forming part of` this specification.

The present invention consists in combining with any suitable lever-rod having teeth in one of its ends of proper size and shape to take hold of the carpet a.- toothed footplate, which lever and plate are attached together by means of any suitable connecting` rod Or -chain,whereby, by bearing down upon the footplate with sufficient pressure to hold its teeth in contact with the carpet, and then placing the lever by its toothed end upon the same, so that their connecting-chain shall be atits full tension, or nearly so, by pushing the upper end of the lever away from the person the foot-plate is thus drawn forward, pulling the carpet with it, which. when the lever has reached the full limit of' its movement, isthere retained by increasing the pressure upon the foot-plate sufficiently therefor. rIhe carpet can be then nailed, or in any proper manner secured, or, if desired to still further stretch it, it is only necessary to again insert the lever in it and draw the foot-plate, holding the carpet at its tension upon each removal and new insertion of the lever, by simplybearing down upon the toothed plate, as before described.

Having thus generally described the objects and the general arrangement and operation of` the present improvementsin carpet-stretchers, I will now proceed to describe the sam-e in detail, reference being had to the accompanying` plate of drawings, of' which- Figurel is a plan or top View of' the same, showing it as applied to a carpet; and Fig. 2, a partial section and side view.

a a in the drawings represent my improved carpet-stretcher, which consists of a lever-rod, b, made ot' wood Or any other suitable material, having inserted in one Of its ends, c, one or more sharp projecting pins or teeth, d, slightly bent. Connected with the lever b, and at the point fthereot, about `One-third of its length, is a chain, g, secured at its other end to the outer end, h, Of` a narrow projecting metallic band or bar, l, fastened by screws m m upon and across the central portion of' thef'oot-plate oz, which may be made Of wood or othersnitable material. In the under side of this plate are inserted a series of sharp projecting pins or teeth, o o, slightly bent, which may consist. of any desired number.

In the use of my carpet-stretcher, madesubstantially as above described, the carpet is first secured by nailing, Orin any other proper manner, to and along one side of' the room or other apartment in which it is placed, when my implement is then applied to the same and operated in the manner as has been hereinbefore fully specified, and the carpet, when sufficiently stretched, nailed at its opposite end, as is evident withoutfurther explanation.

It may be here remarked that by forming the connection of the foot-plate and lever by and through a chain and metallic band, l, as described, in lieu of securing the chain directly to the foot-plate, the plate is always pulled in a straight line by the lever, thus preventing all liability of' tearing the carpet or otherwise def'acing it, as is apparent.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of' the hand-lever l) and foot-plate u, constructed and arranged and operating together substantially in th'e manner described, and for the purpose specified.
