NO. 143,032` Patented September23,873..
amww @if @f NI'rED- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY POWELSON, OF NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY.
i iMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-STRETCHERS.
Specifica-tion forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,032, dated September Q3, 1873; application filed April 14,1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY PowELsoN, of New Brunswick, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpe-t- Stretchers, of which the following is a specification:
The invention here presented represents an improvement in carpet-stretchers, the object of which is to provide a simple and effective means of holding the stretcher to the iioor after the carpet has been drawn its required distance, thus enabling the operator to use both hands in tacking down the carpet. the construction and operation of which will be fully understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view, and Fig. 2 represents a sectional elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The letter A in the accompanying drawing represents an awl or spike set in ahollow handle, B, extending upward from the plate C, which contains the teeth of the stretcher. The slant of the handle B is such as to bring thc line of the awl or spike at right angles, or K nearl)T so, to the pitch of the teeth in the. stretcher.
The operation of the device may be described as follows: First push the stretcher until the carpet is drawn in proper position; then push the a-Wl or spike down through the hollow handle into the licor. The stretcher is then held secure, and the operator may then have use of both hands to tack down the carpet,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The awl or spike A and hollow handle B, in combination with the plate C applied to carpet-stretchers, in the manner and for the purpose substantiallT as herein set fort-h,
shown, and described.
