UNITE STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
DAVID WHITE, OF NORMAL, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-STRETCl-IERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,522, dated April 1, 1873; application filed February 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID WHITE, of Normal, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oarpet- Stretehers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
It consists in applying a swiveled'button and sustaining-yoke to the jointed strips so as to lock the stretcher in any desired position, and thereby enable the same person to do the stretching and tacking down.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a top view.
In the drawing, A represents the floor of a room, B one of the mop'boards, and O a carpet, which is to be stretched and tacked down to the floor. D is a head having the rounded or beveled subjacent face d, through which project the teeth E, which are obliqued in a forward direction so as to take firmly in the carpet, but not to protrude therethrough, and thus scratch the floor B. To. this head D is attached two parallel strips, or plates, F F, which have transverse opposite perforations ff. Between these two strips F F is pivoted, by a detachable pin, G, another plate or strip, H, transversely perforated at several points, h. By transferring the pin G to different holes the carpet may be readily stretched by pressin g down the jointed strips F H to the degree which may be desired in rooms of different dimensions, and with uniformity over the whole length of its spread, while the carpet-layer can place himself, when stretching the carpet, to one side of and not upon it, and may also tack in front of the stretcher. Isis an oblong button swiveled on the end of a yoke, J, which slides on the strip H to accommodate carpets of varying dimensions. The button is slipped on the shank j of yoke, and prevented from escape therefrom by a nut, K. By turning this button longitudinally into line with the middle strip H it will readily pass between the parallel strips F F, and, when the stretching is completed, will be found above them.
By then turning the button across or longitudinally at right angles to the strips the carpet is held and remains stretched until the carpet-layer goes to the front and tacks it down.
Having thus described myinventiomwhatl claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The oblong swiveled button I and yoke J, combined with the strips H F F, as and for the purpose set forth.
DAVID WHITE.
