M. HUFFMAN. BUCKLE FOR HARNESS. No. 447,244.. Patented Feb. 24, 1891.
Z fZw UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARK HUFFMAN, OF MooEELAND, INDIANA.
I BUCKLE FOR HARNESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,244, dated February 24, 1891.
Application filed November 14, 1890. Serial No. 371,473. (No model.)
To all whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARK HUFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mooreland, in the county of Henry and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inBuckles for Harness; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the manufacture and application to which it apperiains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to produce an attachment for different parts of harness, but being more especially designed as a fastening for the breast-strap in harness commonly known as breast-harness, the difference, however, being that in this case the breast-strap is divided into two parts to be joined directly in front.
Another object is to produce for this purpose an attachment that may not be subject to accidental detachment, but be easily disconnected when desired.
Another object is to provide a means for the placing upon or removing from the animal breast-harness without passing same over its head, all of which may be more fully understood from the following specification and claim, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of my device as attached to the breast-strap. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3is a front view of my device, showing the relative position of the parts when securing to or releasing from each other. Fig. 4 is a front and plan view of part a. Fig. 5 is a front and plan view of partb.
The two parts a and I) operate, generally speaking, as a hook and eye. The plate a is provided with a stud or projection c,
which is formed at top into a head, the crown of which projects beyond the supportingstem on two sides at c and is plainat two re maining sides with sides of stem. This head is of such size as to pass easily through an aperture (Z in plate I) and to closely equal said aperture in size and shape. Thus it is greater in one dimension than in the other, the greater dimension of aperture being in line with the breast-strap, while the greater dimension of the head 0 lies transversely to the line of said strap, so that when it is desired to couple the two parts a and b together they must be brought into the position shown at Fig. 3, then brought into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Two opposite corners c of the stem of head 0, being rounded, permit of said plates making relatively a quarter-turn upon each other at the same time the shoulder 1) falls against end a of a, which is the position said plates assume when in use. These said shoulders a and b, abutting against each other, retain the parts in proper working position, so that they may not become accidentally detached.
hen it is desired to detach, it is necessary to bring strap 5' with Z) to the position represented by dotted line b and 8 Fig.1, when a and b may easily be brought to the position shown in Fig. 3 and separated. The plate b is also made with a ring m, which is loosely secured to it by a lug m. Said ring is adapted to support the martingale such as are ordinarily used.
Thus it will be seen that this fastening is easily and quickly coupled and uncoupled when so desired; but when coupled remains securely in such position.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
In a harness buckle or coupling, the combination embracing a plate provided with an eye 6, whereby it is secured to a strap .9, said plate being also provided with a stud or head projecting from it at or near one end, a plate I), provided with an eye f, by which it is secured to a strap 8, an eye cl, with which said latter plate I) is also provided, by which said plate is adapted to be coupled to plate a, and a shoulder b, adapted to abut against opposite plate when so coupled, all as and'for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my
