S. LOB.
DOOR CLOSING DEVIGB. 4
No. 439,076. v Patented Oct. 21, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SYVER LOE, OF LA CROSSE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO MONS ANDERSON AND JAMES LIGHTBODY, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
DOOR-CLOSING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,076, dated October 21, 1890.
Application filed June 9, 1890- Serial No. 354,744. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SYVER LoE, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Crosse, in the county of La Crosse and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Closers, of which the following is a full and clear description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whi.ch
Figure 1 represents a side elevation showing the device detached from the door. Fig. 2 shows the device applied to the door.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for automatically closing doors; and the same consists in the constructions and combinations of devices, which I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I now describe its construction and indicate the manner in which the invention is carried out.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a plate adapted to be secured to the door, and B is a similar plate, which is designed to be secured to the door frame or casing, the said plates A and B having holesamade centrally through them for the reception of the rods O and D. These rods are threaded at their outer ends, and upon said ends are screwed the nuts I), and on said rods, between the inner face of the nuts and the back of the plates A and B, are coiled springs E and F, whose tension is regulated by the adjustments of the nuts. The inner ends of the rods G and D are pivotally secured in a manner substantially as shown, and through the rods back of the jointed connection are made perforations 01, through which pins 6 are thrust whenever it is desired to take 01f or put on the springs and to keep the inner ends of the rods thrust out from the plates. The plates and rods are fitted in mortises in the door and door-frame, so that the plates occupy a position substantially similar to the leaves of a hinge, and to protect the wood-work of the door and its frame from being injured by the rods I surround the latter with metal sleeves or barrels G, as shown.
From this description it will be seen that the device when applied to the door and frame in the manner stated is automatic in its closing movement, for when the door is opened the rods are drawn inward against the power of the springs, and when said door is released the springs operate to throw the door automatically forward into a closed position in the manner common to this class of invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the plates A and B, the rods passing through openings therein, having their outer ends threaded and their inner ends pivoted together, nuts on the rods for regulating the tension of the springs, and pins passing through holes in the rods backof the pivoted connection, whereby the inner ends of the rods are held outward, substantially as herein described.
sYVER LOE.
