{MPROVENENT IN SPRiNG-HINGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,392, dated September 2, 1873; application iiled July 12, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM Home, of Floyd, of the county of Floyd and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Spring-Hinge, of which the following is a specification The accompanying drawing represents a front elevation ot' my improved spring-hinge for gates, doorsand other objects.

The object of my invention is to furnish a simple, neat, and effective spring-hinge, which shuts the door or gate after opening, and prevents its blowing or tlyin g open by the wind or otherwise, as an improvement in the class of door and gate hinges provided with springs `for closing them after being opened. The improvement consists in attaching a standard to one leaf of a hinge, and connecting a springencircled extension thereof with the pintle of the hinge, as hereinafter more fully described.

In the drawing, A represents the hinge, of suitable size and material, and attached in the usual manner. A standard, B, is firmly riveted or otherwise connected to that part of the hinge which is applied to the stationary frame or post of the door, being bent up so as to form a pin-extension, a, of the hinge A. A spiral spring, C, is coiled around pin-extension c, and attached with its upper end to a perforation, b, of the swinging part of hinge A, and with its lower end to a similar perforation, b', of standard B. i

Standard B may also be further suitablyk Vconnected by screws or otherwise to the door duces the shutting of the latter, securing also at the same time sufficient resistance against the accidental blowing up by the wind or otherwise.

The standard and spring attachment of the hinge is of compa-ct shape, at the same time durable and ei'ective, and not liable to get out of order.

Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The standard B, attached to one leaf of the hinge, and provided with the pintle-extension c, encircled by the spring G, connected at its ends with both hinge and standard, all as shown and described.
