HANDLE FOR VEHICLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,268, dated May 20, 1890.

Application filed March 19. 1890. Serial No. 344,461. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE SCALDWELL, of Auburn, Cayuga county, New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Handles for Vehicles, &c., of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a handle such as is commonly used on the bodies and dashes of vehicles and made from a metal rod suitably bent or curved; and my invention consists more particularly in the novel construction and arrangement of the fastening vdevice whereby said handle is secured in place.

In the accompanying, drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of my handle, and 2 is an enlarged sectional view on the line X X of Fig. 1.

A represents a metal rod or bar suitably bent or curved to form the body of the handle. Near the ends of and extendingthrough said bar A are openings, which are threaded to receive the headed fastening-screws B. Sliding freely on the bar A are rings C. On each ring isa circular fiat-faced projection D, through the center of which is made an aperture E, through which the screw B passes The parts are assembled as shown in Fig. 2 in order to secure the handle in place, F being the support to which the handle is attached. The ring C is brought over the threaded opening in the handle, so that its central aperture E coincides with said opening. The screWboltB is then passed through the support F from the rear side through the aperture E, and is set up in the threaded opening in the handle- The handle is thus secured to its support in a very firm and at the same time neat and simple manner.

It will be apparent when the fastening is regarded in the direction of the arrow 1, or from the side of the support to which the handle is attached, that the means of attachment is concealed and that the end of the screw-bolt is covered and protected.

I claim- 1. In combination with the rod A, having a transverse threaded aperture, the ring G, having the flat-faced projection D and aperture E, and the screw-bolt B, constructed to pass through said aperture E and engage in the threaded opening in the rod A, substantially as decribed. I

2. In combination with a support F, the handle formed of the bent rod A, havingnear each extremity a transverse threaded aperture, rings C, ,havingiiat-faced projections D and apertures E, and headed screw-bolts B, constructed to pass through said support and said apertures E and engage in the threaded openings in said handle A, substantially as described.
