SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,031, dated January 7,1890.

Be it known that I, JOHN BURNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Meigs and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful WVagon-Jack, of
v which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wagon-jacks; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved jack, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
I11 carrying out my invention I employ a base A, on which a standard Bis erected, and the said standard is suitably braced by means of the curved metallic bar 0, which has its lower end secured on the base A and has its upper end divided, the branches passing on opposite sides of the standard and being socured thereto. The branches of the said divided end of the brace are extended forward from the standard, forming the arms D D, between which the lifting-bar I1 moves. Between the front ends of these armsD D, Ijournal a roller F, which bears against the front edge of the lifting-bar and serves to prevent the same swinging forward from the standard. The lifting-bar E may be of any desired dimensions, and is provided at its upper end with a notch G, which is adapted to engage the wagon-axle, as will be readily understood. Near the upper end of the lifting-bar I secure the retaining-loop II, which passes around the standard and serves to hold the upper end of the lifting-bar to the standard and to guide the same in its movements.
The standard is provided at about its center with the longitudinal slots .I .I, through which the arms K K of the casting L are inserted, and in which they are pivoted. The front ends of these arms are connected by the links M with the'lifting-bar, and the rear end of the casting is secured to the end of the operating-lever N. The operating-lever is provided in its upper side with a series of transverse ratchet-teeth O, which are engaged by a gravity-pawl P, loosely hung at its upper end on the standard and having its lower end bearing on the lever.
In practice the notch at the upper end of the lifting-bar is caused to engage the wagonaxle, and the operating-lever is then depressed, thereby raising the front ends of the arms K of the casting L and lifting the lifting-bar, so as to elevate the axle. As the operating-lever is depressed, the free end of the pawl will ride downward over the ratchetteeth, so as to engage the same and prevent the accidental lifting of the lever and consequentlowering of the weight.
My device is composed of very few parts, which are simple in their construction and are compactly arranged, so that the device will be strong and durable and can be manufactured at a slight cost. The roller F serves effectually to hold the lower end of the lifting-bar toward the standard and reduces the wear on the lifting-bar to a minimum, while the retaining-loop II and the arms D cause the 'lifting-bar to move in a true vertical plane and prevent lateral swaying of the same. By reason of the slotted construction of the standard and the pivoting of the arms of the casting L within the slots, the said arms are effectually protected against injury, while at the same time the fulcrum of the lever is brought near the lifting-bar, so that the device can be easily operated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The combination of the standard having the longitudinal slots J J, the lifting-bar mounted on the standard, the operating-lever having the ratchet-teeth, the casting secured to the operatingdever and having the arms K K inserted through and pivoted in the slots .I J, the links connecting the said arms with the lifting-bar, and the pawl loosely hung on the standard and engaging the lever, as set forth.
