LIPTING .TAGEI Ne. 271.959. Peeeeeed Feb. e, 18,:8's.
@? WN r A we i UNITED STATES PATENT OEFTCE.
HERMAN WEIS, OF TONIGA, ILLINOIS.
LlFTlNG-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofLetters Patent No. 271,959, dated February 6, 1883. Application filed December I6, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HERMAN WEls, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Tonica, in the county of La Salle and State of' Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention has relation to lifting-jacks, and its object is to provide a simple, cheap, and effective form of jack for universal use; and the novelty consists in the construction of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim..
The figure in the drawing is a vertical ele vation of my improved lifting-jack.
Ais the base or bed piece, to which is secured rigidly the standard B. This standardB is provided with a bolt, C, which forms the fulcrum of the lever D, and which has an end motion in the slot c in the standard. The shorter end of the lever` D is secured to the sliding bar E in such a manner that when the handle of the lever is depressed the bar E will be elevated, and vic"`versa. The bar E is provided with straps e e, which extend rearward on each side of the standard, and the ends of each pair of f to different heights.
straps are connected by a bolt, b b, which for the vertical motion of the lifting-barv The upper end of the bar E is provided ith steps a, by means of which it may be :E )ustd The upper end of the standard B is provided with a plate, F, from passes through the slots dd, so as to form guides/ which is hingeda depending pawl, G, the
lower end. of which engages with the teeth of the rack H, secured to the lever D.
1t will readily be seen that as the lever is depressed the pawl will ride Vover the teeth, and engaging in one of them will hold the weight at any desired point.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The base A, standard B, having plate F, pawl Gr, and slots c d, in combination with the lever D, having rack H and fulcrum-bolt (l, and the sliding lifting-bar E, having straps e c and bolts b b, constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence oi' two witnesses, this 9th day ot December, 1882.
HERMAN WEIS. Witnesses:
JOSEPH Wars, CHARLES Wars.
