A. 0. STIVESON.
WAGON JACK. No. 373,700,. Patented Nov. 22, 1887.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR a. 0 mi/wow ATTORNEYS.
Unrrnn S'ra'rns PATENT @rricn ANTHONY O. STIVESON, OF POMEROY, OHIO.
WAGON-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,700, dated November 22, 1887.
Application filed August 6, 1887. Serial No. 246,365. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern..-
Be it known that l, ANTHONY O. STIVESON, ofPomeroy, in the county of Mcigs and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in \Vagon-Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wagoirjacks; and it consists in the peculiar combination of parts, hereinafter described and claimed, whereby the jack is made more convenient and elfectivc and its range of use extended.
The figure is aside elevation of the jack, showing in dotted lines the position of the parts when in use.
A is a base-block, upon which is firmly mounted an upright or standard, B, whose lower portion is of a broad triangular shape, and whose front edge stands at a slight angle to the vertical. standard B there slides an adj list-able section, (3, whose upper end is notched or stepped to adapt it to axles or wheels of different heights. This adjustable section 0 slides up and down oii anti -i'riction rollers between it and the standard 13, and is guided in its movement by metal straps D D, one of which, D, is fastened to the sliding section and embraces the upper end of the standard, which is of uniform dimensions, and the other of which, D, is fastened to the standard and embraces the lower end of the movable section, which is also made of uniform transverse dimensions.
M M are anti-friction rollers arranged at the joint between the standard 13 and movable section 0, to cause the latter to move freely.
G is the hand-lever, which is made of wood, and is bolted between two slightlycurved iron bars, G, working upon opposite sides of standard B, and fulcrnmed to it by a belt, a. The short end of this lever is connected to the ends of a metal stirrup, F, whose middle portion catches beneath a shoulder, b, of the movable section 0. When the long end of lever G is forced down, this stirrup raises movable section 0, and exerts a lifting action upon the object to which it may be applied.
()n the front edge of this- On the face of the notched portion of sliding section 0, and extending down to shoulder b, there is applied a re-enforcing strip of metal, 0, and through this strip is formed a series of holes, d, adapted to receive the upper bent end of a pendent hook, K, which is used for raising objects which are close to the ground.
On the top of the lever G is arranged a series of pins, 6, and to the upper end of standu ard B is jointed a metal detent or locking-bar, H,whose outer end is forked and straddles the lever G. When the lever G is pressed down to raise the load, the forked end of detent H catches against one of the pins 6 and iocks the lever in this position. To the side of the lever G is applied a spring-catch, 0, which engages with detent H when the lever is raised, and holds the jack in this position when not in use.
In defining my invention with greater clearness, I would state that I am aware of Patents Nos. 187,116 and 271,959, and I do not claim anything shown therein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- The combination of base A,havingstationary standard B, provided with an inclined front edge, a broad triangular lower portion, and a straight upper end, the sliding section 0, fitted to the inclined edge of the standard and provided with notches at its upper end and holes at and shoulder b at its lower end, a re enforcing strip of metal extending over the said notches and holes, straps D D, for connecting the sliding section to the stationary standard, pendent hook K, fitting into holes d, stirrup F, engaging shoulder b, the lever G,
with branched ends G, engaging the stirrup,
and a detect for locking the lever in position, substantially as and for the purpose described.
