Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD H. WATERS, OF WATERFORD, TEXAS.
CLASP.
SPEQIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,527, dated December 3, 1889.
Application filed August 29, 1889. Serial No- 322,365 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD H. \VATERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterford, in the county of Milam and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps or Leather-Fastenings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,'and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The special object of the invention is to make a fastener for pieces of. leather by which bridles and other parts of harness may be made with less stitching and riveting, thereby lessening the labor and ,cost of manufacture.
The invention will first be described in 0011- nection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of my clasp or fastener applied; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section on the dotted line a: 00 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detail inside View of the plate which carries the spring, and Fig. 4 a similar View of the plate which is provided with studs.
In the drawings, A and 13 represent, respectively, the two plates, which are connected together, so as to constitute my invention. The plate A has two key-hole slots a a, through which pass the studs bb'of the plate B. On the outside of the plate A is riveted the end of a plate-spring O, which, when not lifted up, remains in a groove of the plate A flush with the outer surface thereof and directly over the key-hole a. In this spring is a perforation 0, arranged over the narrow portion of the key-hole a and adapted to receive the reduced end or pin b so.as to lock the two plates A B securely together. The opposite walls on each side of the narrow portion of the key-hole slots at a are so beveled as to slide in the corresponding side grooves b of the studs 1) b. have been put through registering holes in two pieces of leather D D, for the purpose of fastening them together, the round part of the key-hole slots at a is slipped over the studs b b and the spring lifted, so as to slide the plate until the reduced end or pin 11 comes to the perforation 0, when the spring will cause the stud-pin L to shoot up into the hole 0, thus locking the plates A B together upon the two pieces of leather.
The spring 0 is slightly concaved under the front end, so as to allow the thumb-nail to be introduced under it for the purpose of lifting it up before pushing the plate A, so as to unlock the two plates.
After abridle has been cut out from the leather it may be put together and finished up in ten minutes, while equal facility is afforded for connecting together other parts of harness With my fastening.
My fastening not only lessens the labor and decreases the cost of making harness,
After these studs 1) h but is very strong, eflicient, and lasting, while it is also quite ornamental in appearance.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
The two plates A B, the former having keyhole slots a a, with beveled side walls, and the latter carrying studs 1) b, undercut at b and provided with top pin 6 in combination with the spring-plate O, perforated at c to receive pin b to form the leather clasp or fastening described.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD H. XVATERS.
