Description

l. SPRUCE.
Belt-Buckies.
N0.\57,883 v Patented Dec.15,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEa JAMES SPRUCE, OF WATEBBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE SCO- VILL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BELT-BUCKLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,883, dated December 15, 1874; application filed Mey 11, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMEs SPEUCE, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Belt-Buckle; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the,V accompanying drawings and the letters ot' reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure l, a front view of the parts clasped together; Fig. 2, one part, and Fig. 3 the other part, detached; Fig. 4, a rear View, the parts as clasped together; Fig. 5, a longitudinal section on line .r x,- and in Fig. 6, a detached rear view of the part Fig. 2.
This invention relates to an improvement in what are known as belt-buckles, the object being to tirrnly secure the two parts together, so that they cannot be accidentally detached; and the invention consists in forming one part to set against a shoulder of the other part, so as to define its position, combined with a turnbutton on one part to pass through a correspondin g opening in the other part, and turned to lock the two parts together, and an incline or inclines on one part to bind the parts together, as more fully hereinafter described.
A is one part, and B the other part, each provided with loops C, or suitable means for attachment to the respective ends of the belt.
The inner edge of the part A may be of any suitable conliguraton. The part B` is raised, so as to form a shoulder, as at a, corresponding substantially to the inner edge of the part A, and this is preferably made of ornamental configuration, so that, when the parts are set together, the shoulder a on the part A and its extreme inner edge will form a central ornament on the buckle-plate; but this is not essential. Ou the back side ot' the part B is a turn-button, D, extending through the plate, with a boss, E, on the outside, attached to said button, so that by turning said boss E the button may be turned. The part A is formed with an opening, F, corresponding to the button D, so that when turned in the positionin Fig. 3, and the two parts set together, the button will pass through the opening F, and the button then being turned transversely across the opening F, as seen in Figs. 1,4, and 5, will lock the two parts together, so that they cannot be separated until the button is turned into line with the opening. In order to bind the two parts together I form a slight incline, d, upon opposite angles oi' the opening F on the back side, up which inclines the button D will ride when turned, and thus draw the two parts closely together. The boss E upon the outside serves as an additional ornament to the center.
I claim as my invention- A buckle consisting ot' the two parts A B, one of which is provided with the turn-button D, the other with a corresponding opening, F, the said opening constructed with an incline or inclines, d, substantially as and for the purpose described.
JAMES SPRUCE.
