DRIVING-REIN HOLDER OR BUTTON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,714, dated April 18., 1882.

Application filed December 29, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, STEPHEN A. MARKER,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving-Rein Holders or Buttons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed 1o drawings, making a part of this specification,

and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my improved holder or button, showing it connected to one of the straps of a pair of driving-reins; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the holder or button detached therefrom; and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation.

The present invention has relation to eer- 2o tain new and useful improvements in rein holders or buttons adapted to be readily connected to the rein and adjusted thereon, as required, the object of said holders or buttons being to prevent the reins from slipping through the hands.

The object of the invention is to materially improve the construction ofthe button or holdor by providing a simple and effective means for attachment to the reins, thus not only im 0 proving the appearance of the device, but enabling it to be manufactured at a greatly reduced cost over those ordinarily in use. These several objects I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings and 5 hereinafter described.

In the accompanyingdrawings, A represents the holder or button, preferably of rubber, and having the usual transverse slot or opening, a, through which the strap 13 of the reins passes,

and the button or holder secured thereon by a. tongue, I). The tongue 12 is connected directly to the holder by pivoting or hinging it thereto, or secured in any other desirable manner which will admit of its end readily entering 5 any one of a series of holes in the strap.

ployed, adapted to slide through, a slot or hole formed by staples or their equivalent. 5o

The-tongue may be connected to the holder or button in various ways to slide through a slot or hole, adapted to go a convenient distance only throughthe rein, and secured to prevent falling out.

In constructing the holder or button A the form is not material, as it may be round or any other desirable shape, and either molded from a single piece of rubber or, if preferred, formed in two separatepieces suitablyconnected together, with a piece of canvass or other like material placed between the two sections to strengthen the holder or button and keep the fastenings from pulling out.

Itshould be noticed that the pivoted, hinged, or sliding tongue, as the case may be, is connected directly to the holder orbutton, thereby forming a neat, inexpensive, and practical device for the purpose without the necessity of using the buckles heretofore employed.

If desired, a recess, 0, may be formed in the holder or button for the tongue I) to rest in; but this, however, is not essential and is left to the discretion of the manufacturer.

I am aware that it is not new to provide buttons or holders for driving-reins with buckles, pivoted dogs with metallic plates, and lips, wedges, and the like for securing the button or holder to the rein, and therefore lay no claim to such means.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A driving-rein holder or button having a transverse opening through it for the reception of the rein or strap thereof, anda tongue suitably connected directly to the holder or button for securing the rein or strap thereto, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
