UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
GEORGE W. SIMONDS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS; MELISSA E. SIMONDS ADMINISTRATRIX OF SAID GEORGE IV. SIMONDS, DECEASED.
COMBINED CLAW-HAMMER AND HATCHET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,990, dated June 11, 1889.
Application filed November 19, 1888. Serial No. 291,275. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known. that I, GEORGE W. SIMoNDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suifolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Claw-Hammer and Hatchet, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a combined claw-hammer and hatchet; and the invention consists in forming a hatchet in one with a hammer-head and a claw that extends from the pole to the face of the hammer-head; and the invention further consists in various tools to be used in connection therewith, as hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of a combined claw-hamfiier and hatchet embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view showing the claw formed in the reverse direction. Fig. 4. shows a side view with an adz' attached thereto. Fig. 5 is a view of the adz detached. Fig. 6 is a side view of an additional hammer-head that may be used in connection therewith. Fig. 7 is a side view of a combined claw-hammer and hatchet, particularly adapted for lathers use.
A represents the hatchet-blade; B, the pole; O, the hammerhead, and D the claw, all cast or formed in one piece, the claw extending from the pole B to the face 0 of the hammerhead C, and leaving a space E between the claw and hammer-head, which may be used as a nut-wrench, if required, the nut fitting in the space E, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Various tools may be made to fit between the jawsof the claw and into the space E, and be retained by means of a single screw, so that they can be readily secured to and removed therefrom. In Fig. 4 I have shown an adz F, secured thereto, and in dotted lines have indicated the position of an extra hammer-head G. These tools are also shown detached in Figs. 5 and 6. The inner portion of these tools are made to conform to the shape of the space cl between the jaws of the claw, so that when inserted they will fit snugly, and when secured by the screw II will be held rigid.
Although I have shown only two detachable tools, it is obvious that a great variety of useful tools may be made, so that when required for use they can be secured in the manner described.
In Fig. 3 I have shown the jaws of the claw D arranged in the opposite direction to that in Fig. 2.
Of course the general shape and size of the combined claw-hammer and hatchet would have to be modified according to the various purposes for which they are intended to be used.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. A combined hatchet, hammer-head, and claw, the claw extending from the pole to the face of the hammer-head, substantially as shown and described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a hatchet A, projecting from one side of the pole B, a hammer-head O, projecting from the opposite side of the pole B, and a claw D, ex-
tending from the outer end of the pole to the face of the hammer, substantially as shown and described.
3. A detachable tool, in combination with the hammer-head O, pole B, and claw D, the lower part of said tool being formed to fit the space cl in the center of the claw D and the space E formed by the upper side of the pole B, side of the hammer-head O, and inner side of the claw D, said tool being secured in place by a screw H, substantially as show-n and described.
In testimonywhereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE NV. SIMONDS.
Witnesses:
WILLIAM B. WRIGHT, E. PLANTA.
