No. 521,428. Patente d June 12, 1894.
e Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and' 'NITED STATES PATENT' OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. BARR, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO J. HENRY HAGGERTY, OF NEW YORK, N Y.
WRENCH;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 521,428, dated 3' une 12, 1894. Application filed February 27, 1894. Serial No. 5011560. (No model.)
To MZ whom it may camera.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. BARR, of
State of New Jersey, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare .the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inve1 tion, such as will enable others skilied in the 'being constantly in engagement with said art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and improved wrench and has for its object the pro-' duction of a simple and durable and inexpensive wrench for readily and easily screwing and unscrewing nuts with the expenditure of but a minimum amount of' time and labor.
The invention consists of a wrench having its handle forked or spaced-apart at one end and provided with two nut-receiving sockets and a ratchet-wheel, a spring-pressed pawl ratchet wheel. e i y The in vention also comprises the peculiar Construction, combination and arrangement of' parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and'particularly pointed out in the claim. l v V p In the accompanying drawihgs2-Figu're 1 is a plan view., Fi'g. 2 is aview in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 00-00, Fig.`1.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the wrench as anfentirety; and a the handle thereof, which is composed of two corresponding parts or sections' united together by rivets a' and having inner flat surfaces and flanges or ridges on their outer surfaces,`said parts .or sections 'in cross-section being conjointly of approximately I-shape: This handle tapers slightly or gradually' from one end to the other,
. and' from a point near its widened end said' parts or sections are distended or bent apart to form a fork and an intermediate space or chamber a wherein is located a block 00 secured in place by'headed rivets aj B, 13,' designate two nut-receiving sockets extending outwardly from either side of the forked end of the handle and having a cylindrical connecting portionb passed through coincident openings in the handle-sections. To this cylindrical portion b is Secured; or it may be formed integral therewith, a ;atchet wheel O, which fits snug within the space or ohamber a With this ratchet-wheel engages a pawl D having its' rounded end d fitted in a corresponding socket in block a A flat spring-'plate d' Secured at one end to block a by screws d bears against this pawl and serves to hold the same constantly in engagement with the ratchet wheel. 6o
The operation and advantages of ny iu` vention are apparent to those skilled in the art,-and it will be specially observed that by means of my wrench a firm leverage' is obtained, whei'eby a nut can be readily and 6-5' easily operated upon and by reversing the wrench the nut can be moved in either direction.
- A wrench constructed as heroin-described is extremely simple 'and inexpensive. By 7o forming' the handle in two corresponding parts or sections the manufacture of the wrench is greatly simplified and the expense materially redu'ced.
- I claim as my invention- The herein-describedimproved wrench con sisting of the handle formed in two corre sponding parts or sections united together and distended at one end and having coincident holes or openings, a block held between 'said S o parts or sections having a socket, apawl fitted in 'said socket, a? spring secured to said block bearing against said pawl, mit-receivingsockets having a cylindrical connecting portion extended through said holes or openings, and the ratchet wheel on said cylindrical portion, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I- have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib ing witnesses. ,i WM. Ci BARR.
