SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,835, dated July 19, 1887.

Be it known that I, MICHAEL IIOGAN, of Pelham, in the county of \Vestchestcr and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Picture-Frame, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention consists in an improved pietnre-frame specially adapted for mounting show-cards or pictures produced upon eardboard, paper, or other material, and in which a glass is dispensed with.

The object of the invention is to produce a frame in which the picture will be flush with. the front surface, and wherein the picture may be cheaply, quickly, and securely mounted.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a perspective view of a picture mounted in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the frame at the miter. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig.2 of a modified form of molding, and Fig. 4. is a transverse section through one side of the frame.

In carrying out the invention the frame is preferably made of wood moldings, provided with a concaved front, A, and a flat upper surface extending parallel with the inner edge, which surface is depressed, as at B, to form the shoulder b, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and t.

W hen the moldings are united to form a frame, the depression 13 is continuous, and the picture 13, mounted or otherwise produced upon a stiff surface, is placed in contact with said depression face outward, the depression Serial No. 237,973. (No model.)

being made preferably of a depth equal to the thickness of the picture and its backing, so that the face of the picture will be flush with the outer edge of the shoulder b. The molding is now provided with a covering, 0, of velvet, paper, or other equivalent and suitable material, which material is extended upward over the face of the picture a distance to produce a mat, 1), serving, also, to retain the pic ture in position, the under side of the picture where it engages the frame having previously been cemented thereto with an. adhesive ma terial. \Vhen paper is used to cover the frame, the frame and picture may be varnished together.

The molding employed need not necessarily be concave, as a convex surface may be provided or any desired contour, the depression, however, in every case being formed as aforesaid.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The herein-described method of mount ing pictures, which consists in forming a depression in the frame, securing the picture in said depression, and covering the outer sun face of the frame and a portion of the outer upper surface of the picture with a flexible material, substantially as herein set forth.

2. The combination, with a frame provided with a continuous upper and inner depression, of a picture adapted to be inserted in said depression, and a flexible covering for said frame, extending partially over and bordering the picture to form a mat, substantially as shown and described.
