To all whom, t may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERIC E. MAINE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Moldings, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved molding particularly adapted for picture-frames, and the construction of my improved molding is such that when made up into picture-frames the glass, picture, and backing associated therewith may beheld within the frame by means secured to and within the rabbet of the molding.

In carrying out my invention I employ a molding of any desired shape having a rabbet of usual form provided in one corner thereof, and I also employ a strip of ieXible material of appreciable width provided on one side with an adhesive substance, and preferably a narrow strip of suitable material, which, together with the aforesaid strip of iiexible material, are secured together and to one face of the rabbet in the molding, as will be hereinafter described.

a represents a molding of any desired shape and suitable material provided, as is usual in picture-framemoldings, with a rabbet 2 running longitudinally in one corner thereof.

b is a strip or piece of fabric of suitable flexible material, one surface of which is covered with glue, mucilage, or other adhesive material, and c represents a narrow strip of cardboard or other material which may or may not be approximately of the same width as the depth of the long face of the rabbet in the molding in which a particular strip is to be employed.

One edge of the iieXible material b is suitably secured to the long face of the rabbet 2, with the greater portion of'the said material extending beyond the same, and the narrow strip c is suitably fastened in place against the adhesive surface of the material Z), with one edge thereof abutting against the short face of the rabbet 2. The flexible material b and strip c may be secured together and to the molding by glue, tacks, vor in any other convenient manner.

The molding hereinbefore described may be manufactured and kept in stock and is particularly adapted to be made up into pictureframes in which a glass d, picture-mat c, and a backing f or other accessories may be employed, and the width of the strip c is preferably the same as the combined thickness of the accessories employed in a given frame, as shown in Fig. 6, and does not necessarily correspond with the depth of the rabbet. After these accessories have been placed in position within the frame the iiaps or extending portions of the iieXible material are to be turned down and made fast to the backing to maintain the accessories in position within the frame, the outer edge of the strip c forming a guide upon which the flexible material is turned down.

In ordinary picture-frames, particularly where the molding'is of light weight, the backing which is tacked within the frame forms no support and lends no strength to the frame, which, if large as well as light, tends to bulge at its points of support, and it will be readily apparent that with a frame constructed of my im proved molding this diiculty is overcome.

I claim as my invention- I. As a new article of manufacture, a molding having a rabbet in one corner thereof, a piece of iieXible material and a strip of suitable material, said strip and piece of material being secured together and to one face of said rabbet.
