AARON J. SHRIVER, OF NEV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR IO S. M. SHRIVER, OF SAME PLACE.
TROUSERS.,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,516', date July Y12, 1887.
Application tiled December 1B, 1886. Serial No. 221,949. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AARON J. SHRTVER, of
the city, county, and State of New York,ha`ve invented a new and useful Improvement in 5 Trousers, ofwhieh the following isa full, clear,
and e'xact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in trousers, and has for its object to provide a means to intercept the strain exerted upon the i@ knees of said trousers, thereby preventing them from stretching or bagging out.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speeitieatiomin which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the iigures.
Figure l is a front elevation of a pair of trousers, partly sectional, having my improvement attached; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of a leg of said trousers at the knee.
y In carrying out my invention I provide the knee parts a of the trousers at the front, upon the inside, with astrip of fabric, B,vpreferably linen, eut diamond shape, about ahalf-ineh or more narrower than the front portion of the trousers at the knee. I attach the said strip 3o B at or near the seams at its sides b only. A space, D, is then formed between the strip B and the knee portion of the saidtrousers, as shown in Fig. 2. The pressure of the wearers knee will therefore press the strip of fabric into the space D without exerting force against the said knee portion of the cloth.
To prevent tearing the strip B from its place in drawing on the trousers, at the top b of the said strip I attach atape, d, which tapeis 4o carried upward and fastened at or near the waistband. Another piece of tape, ci', may be attached at the lower part, b2, of the strip B, if found desirable, the other end being secured near the bottom of the trousers-leg.
The 'strip of fabric B may be made square 5 or oval, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1,without departing from thespiritof myinvention. The strip may be attached at the top to the trousers by a hlindstitch or equivalent means, and then folded down and lfastened, as herein- 5o before stated, if so desired 5 but in practice I preferably provide a tape and attach the strip at two opposite points only.
It will be seen that by my invention the cloth from which the trousers are made is relieved from the strain exerted thereon by the knees of the person wearing them, particularly in sitting down, and while the knee of ordinary trousers is liable to stretch and bag out, thereby marring the shape of the article, 6o through my attachment trousers retain their original shape for a long time.
The invention is equally as applicable to the elbows of dresses and coats as to the knees of trousers. I
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the knee part of trousers, of adiamond shaped stri p of fabric,B, 7o of less width than the said knee part, secured at two opposite points of its sides only, and provided with a tape attached to the upper edges of said strip and to the trousers near the waistband, substantially as shown and described.
