NEW YORK.
FENCE.
SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,057, dated July 5, 1887.
Application filed January 31, 1887. Serial No. 226,038. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it ma concern.-
Beit known that we, J OHN A. WILLrAMs,
. of Orange, in the county of Schny1er,New
York, and EDWIN H. THOMAS, of-Hornby, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fence, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of our new and improved fence, and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation taken on the line was of Fig. 1.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents the base pieces of the fence. To each of these are attached, by pins a or otherwise, the side pieces, B B, which are crossed near their upper ends and secured together by the pins 1) or other fastenings. The pins b also secure to the side pieces, B B, the uprights O. In the crotch formed by the upper ends of the side pieces, B, is placed the top rail, D, which is secured by the ties or wires E to the pins 6.
F represents a bottom rail or board inserted into the mortises G in the uprights C, and notched at H over the upper edge of the bottom piece, A, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. Through the orifices t t in the uprights O are passed the wires J J, which constitute the in termediate rails of the fence between the bottom boards, F, and top rails, D. In this mannor the fence is made very strong and comparatively cheap, and the use of posts driven into the ground is avoided.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The base pieces A, the central bottom boards, F, let into the basepieccs A, the side pieces, 13, pinned at or near the ends of the base-pieces A and crossed at their-upper ends, and the upright pieces C, also pinned to the base pieces, and through which the bottom boards, F, pass, in combination with the top rails, D, placed in the crotches of the side pieces, B, the wires E, and the pins 1), passed through the side pieces, B, and uprights C, the wires being passed from the pin at one end over the top rails and connected to the other end of the pin for lashing the top rails in place, substantially as described.
JOHN A. WILLIAMS. EDWIN H. THOMAS.
