ANDREW N. MOORE, OF TRENTON, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARNFENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,261, dated March 23, 1875; application filed January 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. N. MOORE, of Trenton, in the county of Todd and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences 5 land I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to plank or board and rail fences; and it consists particularly in the construction of the posts for sustaining the boards or rails, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a section of my fence, and Figs. 2 and 3 are side views of posts used thereon; and FigA. is a perspective of the fence and posts.
Each post of my fence is composed of a sill, A, pivoted upright main post B, and a brace, O, secured to the sill and main post, as shown. In addition thereto a false post, D, is used, which may be pivoted at its lower end to the sill A, either on the same or on the opposite side from the main post B. When the false post D is attached to the same side of the sill as the main post B the edges of said posts face each other, and at such a distance apart as to admit oi' the ends of the planks or rails E, and then the upper ends of the posts are connected by a cleat, a, or twisted wire b, a key, d, being inserted under the same to hold the planks or rails in place. A twisted wire may be used at the bottom to connect the false post D to the main post B, instead of pivoting the false post to the sill. yThe adjustable braces being composed of two pieces, O1 O2, are provided with loops h h, to slide upon each other, so that the main post B may be placed at any required angle with the sill A, to adapt the inclination of the fence to sloping grounds.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of sill A, extension-braces O1 O2, loops h h, pivoted main post B, false post D, with rails E E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimonyY that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
A. N. MOORE. Witnesses:
J. R. PENDLETON, W. B. Gr. COOKE.
