To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY E. MORIARTY, ofVVesterly, in the county of Vashington and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Saw-Bucks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to what are ordinarily known as saw horses or bucks, which consist, 1n general, of two interlocking frames set up together to form a rack for holding logs or sticks of wood while the same are being sawed by a handsaw.

The objects of my invention are to provide a saw-horse which may be readily adjusted to open or contract at any angle to receive a log, and that operates to firmly hold the log se curely inposition while being sawed.

To the above purposes my invention consists of the two frames forming the'horse, be- 1ng swiveled orloosely jointed together at two opposite points near the centers of their sides, and in curving the rackjaws of the frames, and providing the same with holding-surfaces, and of a device for adjusting and holding the rack-jaws of the frames at any angle to each other, and of a pivoted foot-rest, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved saw-horse having a log of wood set in the racks or holding-jaws thereof. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view of Fig. 1, with the log removed, and taken on line 22, Fig 3, and with one of the rack-jaws in section. In the said drawings like numbers of referenfie designate corresponding parts throughon Referring to the said drawings, the outer frame, 5, consists of a pair of wooden side supports, 6, in the main straight, and with their upper portions curved correspondingly, and fastened together in parallel position and opposite by means of a round, 7, near their lower ends and the axle 8 near their centers. pivoted loosely the racked bar 11, on the back of which rides a forked spring, 12, fastened upon the crosspiece 13. The frame 14 is composed of a pair of the side supports, 15,which are similar to the above-described supports 6. These supports are fastened together parallel by means of the cross-tie 16. The foot-rest 17 is flat and broad, and is loosely mounted on bar 18, upon which it is tnrnable. The frame 14 is constructed of a width suitable to lie in between the side supports 6 of frame 5, and is loosely journaled on axle 8, around the body of which is placed a wooden sleeve, 19. The strip 20 is fastened across side supports 15 at a point suitable to be engaged on its lower edge by the teeth of the racked bar 11, which is kept in constant engagement therewith by virtue of spring 12 pressing upon it. By virtue of the use of the spring-acted racked bar 11 and the coacting strip the fork of the holdingjaws of the saw-buck may readily be raised or lowered to the proper height to suit the user.

The concave faces of the supports 5 and 14, which form the respective rackjaws of the device, are provided each with a toothed strip, 21, set down in the body of the supports so that their teeth merely project beyond the surfaces they are set in. These strips 21 are curved to conform with the shape of the curved supports, and are held in position by means of screws 23. The racked bar 11 serves to main: tain the frames in any position they may be adjusted in, and prevents the pressure of the log 25 from opening them farther from one another. At the same time the teeth on strips 21 are embedded in the body of the log and hold the same securelyin position while being sawed. The foot-rest 17 is pressed upon by one foot of the operator when sawing the log, and by virtue of being movable on its bearings it readily finds an easy angle for the foot to assume, and so hold the saw-horse in position. The axle 8 is removable from its bearings in the sides of the frames. This axle may be easily pushed out from its bearings and through the surrounding sleeve 19, so that the saw-horse can have its two frames uncoupled and packed flatly together in a small space, for convenience in carrying or transporting the,

same.

My device provides an efficient and durable sawhorse, which is readily adjusted to any angle, and can be taken apart and packed conveniently.

There may be various modifications madein the several parts of my device without substantially departing from the spirit of my invention, as herein described and claimed.

' Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, as hereinbefore set forth, with the outer and the inner frames having curved jaws provided with the toothed strips, and the said frames hinged together and forming the saw-buck proper, of the springacted racked bar hinged to one of the said frames, a strip secured to the other said frame and engaged by the racked bar, and the movable foot-rest pivoted upon one of said frames, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.

In combination, the outer frame, 5', provided with the racked bar 11, the frame 14, provided with the movable foot-rest 17, and the strip 20, engaged by said racked bar, both of said frames having their upper portions curved and provided on the concave surfaces with toothed strips 21, and said frames journaled on the axle 8, whereby they may be adjusted relatively to one another, substantially as described.
