T. BEARD.
SA'W BUCK.
No. 291,669., Pate nte d Jan. 8, 1884 I "WWII WITNESSES: INVENTORP S JQZmaJ/Za/ML" BY ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
THOMAS BEARD, OF KOKOMO, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ALFRED B. WALKER, OF PLACE.
SAW-BUCK.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,669, dated January 8,- 1884.
Application filed November 13, 1883.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS BEARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kokomo, in the county of Howard and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Bucks, of which the following is a description.
This invention relates to that class of devices used to hold cord-wood to be sawed by handsaws; and its object is to provide means whereby a stick of wood may be held from slipping longitudinally or from turning over in the saw-buck while being sawed.
To this end my invent-ion consists in plates provided with coarse sawshaped teeth rigidly secured to the saw-buck, in combination with a toothed lever pivoted thereto and provided with springs and a foot-treadle, as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an end elevation, and Fig. 2 is a plan view, of a saw-buck showing my invention.
A represents the frame of the saw'buck, consisting of the two inner braces, 13, the outer braces, O, and the cross-bars D.
E represents plates of iron or steel rigidly secured to the outer faces of the inner braces,
B. These plates are provided with coarse teeth aprojecting beyond the face of the braces within the fork formed between the two pairs of bracesB and (J, to engage a stick of wood laid in the saw-buck. F represents two elbow-levers, pivoted at f to the same pair of legs which hold the plates E. The upper ends or jaws of theselevers are bent and provided with teeth b, as shown in the drawings, to engage astick of wood laid, in the saw-buck; but to do this the teeth of the le- (No model.)
vers must be pressed toward the stick, be cause the normal position of jaws is out of the fork, as shown in dotted lines, being so held by means of springs G, connecting each lever F with one of the legs or braces O. H is a crossbar joining the lower ends of the two levers F, to serve as a treadle upon which the foot is pressed to bring and hold the teeth I) in contact with the stick. By this means a stick of any usual size will be seized and firmly held against the thrust of the saw without the necessity of being held down by the sawyers knee or foot applied upon the stick.
I am aware that a saw-buck having a toothed aw hinged upon the pivot-bar which joins the legs, and having another toothed jaw pivoted at the top of one horn is old.
I am also aware that a toothed jaw fixed upon one horn of a saw-buck opposed by a pivoted toothless curved arm operated by a treadle pivoted at a distance from said armpivot and connected to the arm by a rod is old. These are not my invention, and I do not claim them as such.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a metallic toothed plate fixed to the horn of one brace of a sawbuck, of a crooked lever pivoted to the same brace at a point below the j uncture of two crossing braces, and having a toothed arm opposing said toothed plate, a treadle fixed to said lever, and a spring to act thereon, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
THOMAS BEARD.
