Description
UNITED STATES PATENT QEEIOE.
THOMAS L. KENWOETHY, OE oOLLiNSvILLE, OHIO, ASSIGNOE To HiMsEE AND ARMSTRONG TWEEDY, OE SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-CLAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,548, dated July 2, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Saw Clamp, invented by THOMAS L. KENWOETHY, of Collinsville, Butler county, Ohio.
The object of this invention is to furnish a clamp for holding saws wh en being filed, which shall be portable, so that it can be used to suit the light, and which shall securely hold the saw its entire length; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of pa'rts hereinafter described.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line X X of Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. v
This clamp iS made in two parts, A and B, each part being a frame consisting of two uprights, 0 C, connected together by rails D D and by the jaw E at the top of the frame. The width of the frame is designed to be equal to the length of the saw to be filed. These two frames are connected together by the bars F- one in each pair of uprights. These bars are pivoted in mortises through the uprights, and are somewhat loose at one end, so as to allow the jaws E E to open to receive the saw. To keep these jaws closed and the saw tightly clamped while being iiled I spread theV two frames at the bottom by means ofthe horizontal frame G. This frame consists of twobars, H H, and cross-bar I. The ends of the bars H H are pivOted-to one of the frames, as seen at J, so that the other ends, with the cross-bar I, will rise and fall. This crossbar I bears against the inside of the uprights when it is raised, so that when it is forced down onto the shoulders K K of the frame B the bottoms of the two parts will be spread. In this case A and B act as levers, the connecting-bars F F are fulcrums, and the saw is clamped between the short ends of the levers. L is a hook, by which the cross-bar I is held up when the clamp is not in use.
With this clamp the saw is clamped its entire length with ha force proportioned to the power of the .lever purchase. It is portable, and may be used anywhere to obtain the best light. They can be made of any height, so that a person may stand or sit when iiling a saw.
I do not confine myself to the precise form or arrangement of any of the parts described, as they may be varied in many ways Without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-` ent- A saw-clamp consisting of the parts A B, connecting-bars F F, and pivoted frame G, when the same are arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
THOMAS L. KENWOBTHY.
