BOOK HOLDER;
No. 359,180. Patented Mar. 8, 1887.
N PETEHE, Pm 1mm v. c.
UritTnn STATES GEORGE S. RICHMOND, JR, OF EAST HADDAM, CONNECTICUT.
BOOK-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION for:
Application lileil Ducomber 30, 1386.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon SIMMONS RICH- MOND, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at East Haddam, in the'county of Mid dlesex, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book- Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has reference to book-holders; and it consists in the improved construction hereinafter set forth and explained, whereby a cheap device is provided that will etficiently subserve all the purposes intended.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents in Vertical elevation my improved book-holder, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing an open book in position in said holder.
A refers to a back or body portiomwhieh, in the event of the device being employed for music, will be the rack thereof. Otherwise it may be suitably supported.
(t refers to a central horizontal rest portion for the book.
On the front of the portion A, above the portion a and on a horizontal line with each other, are secured two pair of loops, 1) b, in which are mounted horizontal rods B, which are independent, as shown, and have their outer portions bent down vertically to present depending arms 0. Two additional pair of bearing-loops, d d, are located on a line with each other, parallel with but below the loops Z) 1/, and in said loops are mounted the horizontal portions cfof a lever, the central part of which is bent and looped to present a vertical operating portion, C, which normally inclines obliquely from the face of the rack A. The ends of the portions cf are extended and g part. of Letters Patent No. 359,180, dated Ii/Iarch 8,1887.
Serial No. 223,011. (No model.)
bent down and outward to form cranks y,whicl1 are located between the rack and the depending arms 0.
, In operation thethumb of the operator is caused to press the operating portion C toward the rack, the fingers of the operator bearing against the rear face of the rack near the top. This movement of the portion C causes the horizontal portions ef to partially turn in their loops, so that the cranks are thrown out from V the rack, thereby raising the depending arms, so that the sides of-the book maybe passed beneath the same. Upon releasing the operating portion C the depending arms 0 resume their first position, retaining the book sides and leaves in the desired position.
It will be apparent that the device is simple. involves but few parts, and is not bulky, to interferewith its convenient transportation from place to place.
I am aware that heretofore it has been proposed to provide structures with a pair of spring-arms and combining therewith a central operating-crank, and I do not therefore claim, broadly, such features.
I claim- The combination, in a book-holder, of a body portion provided with bearings, rods supported in said bearings and connected to said body portion and provided with depending arms, and a lever formed of one piece and comprising portions cf, cranks g, and central operating part, C, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGES. RICI'HIOND, JR.
