UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVUS A. ST. JOHN, OF PULTNEY, NENV YORK.
BREAST-COLLAR COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,028, dated December 7, 1886.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVUS A. ST. JOHN, of Pultney, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breast Collar Couplings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
The object of my invention is to furnish a coupling for the breast-collar of a harness which will conform to the shape of the breast of the horse and remove the pressure from the wind-pipe; and to that end it consists in connecting the two ends of the breast-collar by means of a metal loop or link, one end of which is permanently attached to the breastcollar, while the other end may be removed at will.
In the drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, A A are the two parts of the breast-collar of ordi nary construction.
To one end of the collar is attached, by rivets or other suitable means, a plate or strap of any desired material and form, in the folds of which is permanently secured one end of the metal loop of link D. Upon the other end of the breast-collar is afliXed, by any suitable means, acatch-plate, B, as shown in the drawings, into which the free end of the metal link or loop is snapped. The loop or link D is curved to fit the shape of the horses breast, thus obviating the danger of any rubbing or scratching the horse.
I am aware that breast-collars have been made in two parts and permanently joined by a connectiugbar. Such construction I do not claim.
Having described my invcntiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1S-
The combination, with the adjacent ends of a divided breast-collar, ot' a plate or strap rigidly secured to one of said ends, a link arched or bowed outward from the line of the breast-collar and hinged to said plate, and a hook secured to the other of the aforesaid ends and adapted to engage the link, substan-
