Be it known that I, VILLIAM ALLEN NIX- ON, of Maple Rapids, in the county of Olinton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brooms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings,forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is aside'elevation. Fig. 2 is a Vertical transverse section. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a part of thejoint by which the handle is connected with the broom.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient device for connecting the brush of a broom with its handle, so that the brush may be inclined at any desired angle with the handle.

My invention consists of a pair of metallic frames secured to opposite sides of the broom, and provided with a socket for receiving a knuckle secured to the broom handle, the knuckle being provided with a series of holes in its periphery for receiving a spring-acted catch carried by one of the brush-holding frames, as hereinafter more fully described.

The triangular frames A A are formed of cast or stamped metal, are curved to adapt them to the form of the shoulder of the brush of the broom, and are made open to secure lightness and to diminish the quantity of material required in their construction. The extremities a of the frames A A, which extend down over the sides of the brush, are secured to the brush by a bolt, 1), passing through the frames and through the broom. The frames A A extend beyond the shoulder of the brush, and are curved toward each other, and form a socket, B, for receiving the knuckle 0, attached to the end of the broom handle socket D.

, The knuckle 0 consists of a hollow cylinder connected with the socket D by an arm, 0, and arranged at right angles with the socket. In the sides of the knuckle O are formed several oblong apertures, (Z, for receiving a bolt, 6,

sliding in guides formed in the part of the socket B carried by the frame A.

The frames A A are clamped upon the shoulder of the broom by a bolt, f, to the head of which is pivoted a lever, g, which is also pivoted to the bolt 0. To the free end of the leverg is attached, a spring, h, which bears upon into the holes (Z of the knuckle C, so that the knuckle may be turned at any desired angle, and secured in position by the entrance of the bolt e into one of the holes d.

Any ordinary broom may be adapted for use in connection with my improved attachment by sawing off the handle, clamping the brush of the broom between the frames A A, and securing the socket D on the handle; but I prefer to manufacture brooms to be used especially in connection with my improvement, as the user, having a handle and one of my attachments, may at any time renew thebrush of the broom without difficulty, and the man ufacturer and dealer will be enabled to pack a large number of the broom-brushes in the space commonly occupied by a few brooms with handles attached, thus not only reducing the expense of transportation, but also protecting the brooms against injury during shipment.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of the frames A A, adapted to receive the brush of a broom, the bolts bf, for clamping the frames on the brush, the knuckle 0, provided with the socket D, and having the openings (2, and adapted to be received in the socket B, formed in the frames A A, and the bolt 6, adapted to hold the knuckle O in different positions, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination, with the brush and handle of a broom, of the frames A A, bolts 1) f, for clamping the frames to the brush of the-broom, the socket D, adapted to receive the broom handle, and provided with the knuckle 0, having the openings d, the bolt 6, and the spring-acted lever g, as herein described.

3. The combination, with the frames A A, provided with the socket B, of the bolts 1) f, for clamping the frames to the brush, the haudle-socket D, provided with the knuckle 0, having the openings d, the bolt e, lever g, pivoted in the bolt f, and the spring h, secured to the lever g, and arranged to hold the boltein the holes (1 of the knuckle, substantially as herein described.
